Apprentice Job Information
An apprenticeship is a form of experience for any aged 16 years old or above and can take 1 to 5 years to complete. It’s a way of learning on the job, gaining valuable knowledge and great theoretical/practical skills. Most apprentices spend the majority of their time in the workplace learning job-specific skills and are usually supported by a specialist learning provider. There are many different apprenticeships available across every industry, such as hairdressing and dental nursing. This means there are no shortages of career paths for those seeking an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are paid, and a lot of people work alongside their studies. The mixture of on-the-job training and classroom learning gives apprentices the chance to gain qualifications without needing internships or subject-specific university degrees. Apprentices need to be eager to learn and have great observational skills.

Apprentice Job Requirements
Every type of apprenticeship offers different levels of qualifications on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), meaning requirements will vary depending on the role. For an intermediate relationship, the only requirement is to be over 16 years old and no longer be in full-time education. Advanced apprenticeships (which is the educational equivalent of an A-Level) ask candidates for prior work experience and at least three A*-C GCSEs (or equivalent). The next level, higher apprenticeships, is similar to a foundation degree and employers will need five A*- C grade GCSEs and some Level 3 qualifications in relevant subjects (A-levels or BTEC). The final apprenticeship stage is called the ‘degree apprenticeship’ and it has the toughest requirements. Candidates need three A-Levels in a specific grade range, five A*-C GCSEs and prior work experience.

Apprentice Job Market Trends
There is a wide range of apprenticeships in over 1,500 different job roles. As there are no specific times to apply for one, candidates can secure an apprenticeship any time of the year. Apprenticeship wages are different from the National Minimum Wage for those under 18. Wages begin at £3.80 and become £5.90 for 18-20 year old. Those aged between 21 and 24 can earn the minimum wage - £7.38.
