Project Manager Job Description

Project managers work across a variety of sectors, but the most common ones are in construction, engineering and IT. Responsibilities include tracking work that needs to be completed, setting deadlines as well as assign tasks to the project team and identifying any potential risks that may happen. Project managers have to complete a project that follows the plan whilst reporting to senior managers. Other forms of project managers include project officer, business change managers and project coordinators. Day-to-day responsibilities include following processes that were made by the Project Management Institute (PMI), initiating projects and carrying out planning.

Project Manager Job Requirements

It is unlikely to get into project management as a new graduate as work experience and training is needed before progressions, so starting off as assistant project manager is more likely. A degree isn’t necessary for project management but studying towards a foundation degree, HND or degree in business or project management will put you ahead of others, as well as give you the practical knowledge about the commercial aspects of projects. Chances of being hired are increased with the PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) qualification. It is a de facto project management standard. It provides the skills to successfully manage projects as it allows candidates to control resources and risks, leading to fewer mistakes.

Project managers earn between £20,000 and £35,000 per annum depending on the sector. With more experience, people can expect to earn between £40,000 and £80,000. A lot of project managers freelance nowadays and negotiate a daily rate for the duration of their contract. The rates may vary between £300 and £500 a day.
