What Public Sector jobs are there?

The public sector is the portion of the economy composed of anything government and any organisation relating to the government. It would not include households, voluntary organisations and private companies. The easiest way to understand what the public sector is is that it includes government ownership or control rather than just function. This includes the exercise of a public authority or the implementation of public policy. Some public sector jobs are found in healthcare, law enforcement, social care and education. Paramedics and probation officers are all part of the sector. Administration jobs are one of the most popular career choices in the public sector and can be categorised into general, specialist and professional.

Public Sector Job Requirements

Entry requirements will depend on the role the candidate is applying for. For example, in order to become a top-tier politician (such as those who make up the Cabinet), a bachelor’s and sometimes a Master’s degree is required to reach the top. However, lower down the political ladder, there is no minimum requirement to stand for election as a councillor. On the other hand, as a firefighter, employers will focus more on training than academic qualifications. Besides GCSEs in maths and English, becoming a firefighter requires applicants to pass the National Firefighter Ability (NFA) test and the National Firefighter Questionnaire (NFQ).
