Software Engineer Job Information
The term ‘software engineering’ was first coined by Margaret Hamilton, the woman who wrote the code for Apollo 11’s onboard flight software and made the US’ mission to the moon possible. Software engineering is a career focused on operating system design and coding. These engineers are responsible for designing and developing software solutions to meet their clients’ or company’s requirements. However, the term ‘software engineer’ is quite broad, as most software engineers would be in more focused fields, such as a system analyst or web developer. The role covers writing code for operating systems as well as making sure programs and systems are functioning properly, ensuring efficiency. The job will have engineers working many hours, so high levels of concentration is a must for the role. Although the work is usually office based, part-time, contractor and freelancing opportunities are becoming more and more popular.

Software Engineer Job Requirements
Most employers are open to graduates with all types of degrees as long as applicants have technical abilities. However, having a degree in a related subject such as information systems, mathematics or computer science will increase chances of employment. IT employers will usually expect applicants to have a 2:1 degree or above to ensure the role is suitable for the candidates.  Experience with a digital agency and I.T. company will enhance the chances of being hired. A lot of the training will be done once employees begin working, with the help of senior software engineers, so those without relevant degrees can still apply. Software engineers will be expected to have in-depth knowledge of programming languages such as C++, C#, and Java.

Software Engineer Job Market Trends
The market for software engineering is rapidly growing due to the advent of automation and development of technology. The market is projected to demonstrate remarkable growth by 2022. Software engineers can expect to earn the average salary of £50,000 per annum. Chances of advancements are high depending on experience and IT knowledge.
