Birmingham 2022 and Festival UK* 2022 are seeking a highly motivated and experienced team player to take on the role of Data Protection Legal Counsel across both organisations. The role is a great opportunity for any candidate who is keen to tackle some of today's toughest and important legal challenges in this cutting-edge area of law.

The role will focus on providing legal advice to relevant internal departments including the Commercial, HR, Marketing, IT, Business Integration, Games workforce, security and accreditation teams in order to identify and mitigate legal risk, support the effective management of data and to develop governance frameworks across the business.


Serve as a key subject matter expert and advisor to Birmingham 2022's Legal and Brand Protection team and to the Festival Legal team on privacy and data protection issues in commercial negotiations.
Provide training to legal colleagues and the organisation as a whole regarding privacy and data protection issues in commercial matters, as well as develop, maintain, and update guidelines, templates, and other resources.
Provide subject matter expert input in connection with regulatory investigations, individual complaints and enquiries received related to GDPR and PECR, the management of GDPR individual data subject access rights requests and data retention policies and implementation.
Drive and manage the data protection governance programmes and projects across the company group.
Monitor and respond to developments in data protection and information security.
Advise on new and emerging legal and regulatory developments impacting data privacy and data security, including identifying trends and potential impacts on business activities.
Undertake and assist with, and offer advice in connection with, data protection risk assessments across both organisations.
Be the lead on responding to all Freedom of Information Act requests, liaising with the relevant departments to which any request relates, working with the communications teams and with DCMS and/or devolved administrations to prepare formal responses to such request.
Be appointed as the Data Protection Officer of Birmingham 2022 and the Festival.Skills & Experience Required


Either a qualified legal professional working in-house or at a reputable law firm, or a non-qualified legal professional with experience working within a data protection role.
Experience providing risk-based and pragmatic resolution of outstanding privacy and data protection aspects of commercial negotiations and leveraging quick, concise, and commercially focused legal advice.
Pragmatic thinker and demonstrated collaborator, who displays sound legal and business judgement in providing practical advice to clients on privacy and data protection issues.
Working with a team-based approach to subject matter management and knowledge sharing, and comfortable working in a flexible, agile environment that emphasises collaboration and team performance.
Excellent communication and presentation skills; ability to communicate and help non-experts understand applicable regulations and requirements in easily understandable and effective ways.
Possess excellent business judgement and outstanding critical thinking and analytical capabilities.
Exceptional writing and drafting skills, with attention to detail and ability to generate creative original drafted documents.Desirable

Previous experience as Data Protection Officer or working with a Data Protection Officer within an organisation is desirable.Salary - £55,000 - £60,000 per annum

Start date - March 2021
