Job Description

The Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business, based in Edinburgh, is uniquely positioned as one of the world's top manufacturers of radars, lasers and infra-red countermeasure systems.

As a Software Development Manager at Leonardo, you will lead a large software development team of around 35 engineers on one of our key radar development programmes.

Ensuring the project releases the required functionality to the required quality, cost and schedule is key. You will clearly articulate the project position to stakeholders, lead your engineers to success, and manage the team through a transition to more agile techniques.

Key Responsibility Areas

As a Software Development Manager, you will be responsible for:

The strategic direction of software in multiple value streams within a product family. The scheduling, estimating, execution and delivery of software work packages, to both internal and external customers. Providing project reporting to key stakeholders, including external customers. Providing technical expertise to support customer and project needs. Ensuring releases satisfy requirements and meet quality standards. Ensuring software requirements for the project are complete, unambiguous and testable. Supporting the team through a move from waterfall delivery methodology to using more agile techniques and practices. Creating a high-performing team through a culture of mentoring, coaching and teaching.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required

As a Software Development Manager, you will possess the ability to lead teams and drive projects forward. You will have a strong technical background, which will support your ability to influence, challenge and manage customer expectations and requirements. You will be an experienced problem solver who works to high standards, taking on challenges with flexibility and determination.

To be a successful Software Development Manager, you should have:

Experience in managing and leading software development teams. Experience of the full software project management lifecycle. Experience in planning, including estimating, allocating and reviewing work. Excellent customer engagement skills and the ability to manage customer expectations. A solid understanding of cost/quality trade-offs and risk management. A good understanding of software safety.

Additionally, you will have:

Broad business domain knowledge in an embedded software environment. Experience in Aerospace and/or Defence sector is desirable, but not essential. Deep expertise in Object-Oriented Software development, with the ability to apply OO principles to architecture, design and development. Hands-on experience as a Software Engineer, using a range of languages. Ability to travel for short periods of time. A degree in a technical disciplipline
