Strategy Manager



The Strategy Manager is responsible for leading significant strategic change projects across the Firm, working in a specialist advisory role with ExCom, the Firmwide Managing Partner (FMP), other partners in management roles, the COO, and Business Teams Heads of Function. The role will have direct access to the Firm's most senior stakeholders, working closely alongside the existing Senior Strategy Manager.

This is a unique opportunity for the individual to grow through the Linklaters business by working in the strategy team for 12-24 months (candidate dependent) and then to go on to take a future role in our China business, working with the National Managing Partner and the Regional COO.

The role requires a strong strategy and consulting background, specialist skills, a global outlook, and the ability to interact, challenge and influence credibly at senior levels in the Firm. Prior experience or knowledge of professional services organisations and the legal industry are advantageous but not mandatory.

The role manages projects which are confidential and sensitive in nature involving material strategic and operational issues; the candidate requires gravitas, presence and must gain the complete trust and confidence of those partners with whom he/she interacts. The role is international in nature, working with colleagues across our global network. The clients for the projects of the Strategy Manager are the senior management of the Firm. The ideal candidate also needs an understanding of and sensitivity to the decision-making structures in the firm, to ensure the coordination of due process and successful implementation of recommendations.

Key relationships with Senior Management:

FMP, Head of Strategy Greg Jackson Divisional Practice Heads, Global Practice Heads, Regional Managing Partners (particularly Asia), National Managing Partners, Global COO, Heads of Function, Business Managers, Regional COOs (particularly Asia.).

Direct reports:

Line management responsibility for analysts as appropriate and other business services resources on a project basis.

Key responsibilities and challenges

1 Strategic project management

Developing and implementing Firmwide strategy and strategic projects for the senior management of Linklaters, including:

  • Strategic appraisal of investment opportunities including internal elections, lateral hire assessment and business case review
  • Strategic support to global practices / offices
  • New practice area and product development strategies
  • Performance improvement projects at practice / geographic levels
  • Projects in support of our sectors
  • Firmwide strategic projects, e.g. profit sharing, the Strategy Refresh, etc.

This will involve working closely with the Head of Strategy, FMP, Senior Partner, COO, ExCom, Practice and Office Heads, Project Services and the Strategic Communications team.

2 Strategic advisory

Maintaining an ongoing perspective on key trends impacting the business, identifying specific implications and raising these with relevant senior managers across the firm. Building appropriate communication materials to optimise focus on strategic changes. Influencing relevant parties to address strategic changes. Ensuring relevant market / product trends feed into product development team. Acting as a sounding board on strategic issues to senior management.

3 Organisational strategy

Providing strategic advice in relation to organisational issues, developing organisational strategies for business units / functions as appropriate, connecting organisational dimensions (eg running workshops to embed sector priorities into global practices). Identifying organisational impact of market trends,

4 Network / communications

Building an effective network across the firm to channel strategic thinking and identify opportunities for Strategy & Project Services to add value. Ensuring excellent communications within function and between function and rest of Firm. Ensuring sharing of best practice.

5 Line management

Line management of analysts within the team and other resources on projects, often on a cross-functional basis.

Working with the Head of Strategy, this will include leading the team to ensure appropriate allocation and prioritisation of work, effective working within the team and with other business teams, budgeting for the team, managing career conversations, remuneration and the size and shape of the team.

Please note that this role is open from 19 June 2020 to 19 July 2020. A competitive remuneration package will be offered.

Education / Qualification

First Degree (BA or MA 2:1) - degree involving data analysis and understanding of economics/ business preferred



Fluent Mandarin required

Practical experience
  • Strategy consulting experience in a leading consulting firm, or within an internal strategic role in a corporate / financial organisation
  • 4+ years' experience in the same or similar role
  • Experience of running strategic change projects in complex environments, and influencing at senior management level
  • Proficient in Excel, PowerPoint, Word
  • Experience of running strategic change projects in complex environments, and influencing at senior management level
  • Professional service firm management experience / law firm experience (preferred)
  • Understanding of China, Chinese clients and Chinese business/regulatory environment a big plus
