Support Worker – Transforming Care
Location: Wandsworth
Application Deadline: 13 November 2020
Salary: £11.17 per hour

Are you interested in a career that will truly make a difference to a young man’s life?

At Certitude, we are rated as outstanding by CQC for our domiciliary care and are proud of our history of supporting people with complex mental health needs and learning disabilities, supporting more than 1,500 people in a diverse range of services. This includes supporting people as part of the Transforming Care programme. Transforming Care is all about supporting people with learning disabilities and/or autism to live in their own homes, in the community, and most importantly, close to their family and friends.

We are recruiting Support Workers to support a young man in Wandsworth.

Who will you be supporting?

A very friendly and kind young man who has autism and wants to make the most of opportunities, activities and skills presented to him to become as independent as possible. He is currently learning catering skills and enjoys cooking healthy meals.

People who have worked alongside him over the years have consistently reported how rewarding they have found being in his life – and this is a really exciting time to join him in shaping a positive and fulfilling future.

Here’s what he says is important for you to know about him:

My name is B and I like to keep fit. I love football, especially my team. I enjoy gardening. I like going for long, brisk walks. I like travelling to places on public transport. I like board games and playing table tennis. I live near my family and love spending time with them.

My autism is very rare and I’m very bright. People say it’s rare because I worry about what other people think and this can be unusual in autistic people. People also say that I’m kind and thoughtful.

I want my companions to:

- Be good listeners because I need to talk about things that are worrying me
- Enjoy walking with me
- Be positive, fun and enjoy spending time with me
Please note that B does have an assistance dog who'll be living in the house.

What will the role involve?

You will be supporting him in all aspects of his life. This will be the first time he is living in his own home as a tenant and so your role will be key in enabling him to develop independent living skills. While he will be your priority, you will also be willing to work in partnership with his family and other professionals as part of a network of support to meet his complex needs. All staff brought on will have to work a certain number of nights including some sleep-in shifts. Cooking and cleaning skills would be an advantage.
What qualities will you need?

You will need to be enthusiastic, proactive, highly reliable, dependable, patient, sensitive and compassionate.

Ideally, you’ll have experience in working with adults with autistic spectrum disorders but we will support you to gain the skills to provide excellent support; what is essential is that you are keen to make an important impact on the life of this young man. To him, the right people can and will make all the difference to his life, and therefore his family's, too.

You will be supported to have the right skills and knowledge through:

- Specialist training including positive behaviour support, person-centred active support, autism training, and communication training
- Support and training in sensory integration difficulties and complex communication needs
- Support and training from the Family Support Team
