Senior Data Engineer

The Role:

We are looking for an experienced Data Engineer  to join us on a permanent basis.  We need talented individuals to apply their software development and data engineering skills for solving problems with data across a number of critical UK sectors.

You will work closely with the Data Architect, Senior Data Engineers and fellow Data Engineers to form an integral part of the team.   • Working in a team of peer Data Engineers in an Agile manner
  • Build, Maintain and Operate Data environments in the cloud
  • Debug and resolve data processing and analytics issues
  • Being proactive in evaluating and developing tools and technologies in improving the data platforms
  • Supporting the development of data integration and data processing processes
  • Sharing and collaborating with engineering, testing and dev-ops teams
  • Supporting the creation of project plans, identification of risks, and generation of risk mitigation plans
  • Supporting the migration of test and sensitive production data
  • Supporting the operational system in a 3rd Tier support capacity

What does Leidos need from me?

  • Postgres Database administration experience
  • Expertise in SQL programming with experience on PostgreSQL (PL-SQL a plus)
  • Experience in resolving SQL performance issues
  • SQL programming (PL-SQL a plus)
  • Experience with AWS Database offerings such as RDS, Aurora
  • Leading a team of Data engineers in an Agile / Scrum environment
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience estimating task effort and identifying dependencies

The following would be advantageous:

  • AWS Aurora Database or similar RDS managed database
  • Large scale data migration experience
  • Familiarity with DB2

We are currently recruiting for a Data Engineer to join our wider data community! You will work in a team of Data & AI Engineers, Data Scientists, Developers, Analysts and Architects and work on the design and build out of cutting-edge machine learning and AI services, supporting analytics and product iteration across our business.

  • Build and support esure’s data products within their industry leading platform.
  • Work with product managers, data & AI engineers to deliver technical solutions for our most pressing data problems including GenAI applications 
  • Design, build, and maintain the data and analytics platform’s components to enable seamless data consumption and usage, including orchestration, monitoring, and performance optimization. 
  • Integrate data from a variety of sources, assuring that they adhere to data quality and technical standards 
  • Creating frameworks and processes for data pipelines across the data and analytics platform 
  • Establish and uphold coding and data process standards across the platform, actively promoting and enforcing best practices. 
  • Improve data engineering processes and roll these out across our team and wider data community 
  • Work with architects on best design for data products, evaluating and experimenting with new data tools & supporting ML & AI infrastructure and workflows.
Qualifications

What we’d love you to bring:

  • A passion for designing and building a robust data platform
  • Great interpersonal skills and collaborative mindset
  • Strong hands-on experience with modern cloud data warehouses such as Databricks/Snowflake, ideally on AWS
  • Strong Python experience, including deep knowledge of the Python data ecosystem, with hands-on expertise in Spark and Airflow
  • Hands-on experience in all phases of data modelling from conceptualization to database optimization supported by advanced SQL skills
  • Hands-on Experience with implementing CICD, using Git, Jenkins or similar technologies.
  • Solid hands-on experience implementing batch and real-time data integration frameworks including assessing performance, debugging, and fine-tuning those systems
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the engineering necessary to acquire, ingest, cleanse, integrate, and structure massive volumes of data from multiple sources
  • Experience with Terraform or similar Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools is a plus
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes for containerization and orchestration of data workflows is a plus
  • Exposure to Generative AI in production is a plus.

Location: RG7 4PR , located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking .

Package: 50,060 - 70,000 (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight.

Clearance Level: You will need to obtain and maintain DV security clearance for the role. This will be funded by AWE. The nature of our work does mean you need to be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 10 years in order to apply for DV clearance.

Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE Aldermaston.

AWE is currently recruiting for a Senior Data Engineer for the IS Modernisation group. In this role you will be accountable for the development of digital twin platform products in line with relevant company policies, processes or external regulations, standards, codes of practice, and best practice. You will lead on analysis and programming support to the business in line with the business plan to protect, develop, and deliver the AWE mission.

Utilising your problem-solving abilities, creativity, and technical skills to design and implement data-driven solutions that drive real impact in the world. As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be responsible for end-to-end execution of high-stakes projects, collaborating in small teams and taking ownership of project outcomes from inception to delivery. Your work may involve discussions on architecture, data wrangling, coding web applications, engaging with internal customers, and establishing team strategies.

AWE is seeking to have an enduring internal capability to conduct strategic modelling and operational planning. You will take a key role in shaping and leading this fast-paced and newly formed team.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with internal and external customers to understand their greatest problems and design and implement data-driven solutions.
  • Take ownership of high-stakes projects, leading end-to-end execution with small teams.
  • Engage in and contribute to architectural discussions with fellow engineers and wider stakeholders to drive effective solutions.
  • Analyse/Interrogate massive-scale data, ensuring its quality and usability.
