About the Role

Research Assistant in Digital Health - Strand, London, WC2R 2LS  About us

The Department of Psychosis Studies is the world’s leading department for research into psychotic disorders by high impact publications. It is part of the IoPPN; the largest academic community in Europe devoted to the study and prevention of mental illness and brain disease.  The IoPPN produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2021). The IoPPN\'s greatest strength is the interdisciplinary nature of both its research strategy and educational activities, providing unique opportunities for students and staff.  

About the role

The postholder will be part of an exciting new project to develop an app to support management and treatment for people with schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. The postholder will be responsible for developing apps and related digital technology for use on android and apple smartphones and undertaking field testing and refining of the apps with volunteers, including people with psychotic disorders. They will also be responsible for data analysis under supervision and other academic activities, including helping with literature review of the use of digital technology for people with mental illnesses

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an a fixed term contract for 1 year from appointment (with potential to extend depending on funding)

Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This entitlement, from the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers , applies to Postdocs, Research Assistants, Research and Teaching Technicians, Teaching Fellows and AEP equivalent up to and including grade 7. About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. Skills and experience of coding smartphone applications in Flutter or similar 
  2. A relevant undergraduate degree (e.g. computer science, psychology, neuroscience, engineering, mathematics, statistics) with at least a 2:1 or equivalent
  3.  Excellent organisational and time management skills and attention to detail  
  4. Strong academic trajectory as evidenced by performance in A-levels (or equivalent), and in higher education at the top end, and/or prizes or other relevant indicators
  5. Ambitious, enthusiastic, responsible, flexible and able to work independently to deadlines 
  6. Ability to work in a team with excellent written and oral communication skills 
  7. Ability to critically appraise scientific literature and develop research ideas 
  8. Experience of undertaking relevant research projects (eg using digital health interventions and/or research in people with mental illness)

Desirable criteria

  1. Proficiency in relevant programming languages (e.g. Dart, Java, C)  
  2.  Knowledge and experience of using database and other relevant software (eg. statistical software such as R, STATA or SPSS) 
  3. Experience of recruiting people to digital health research (particularly people with relevant mental illnesses such as psychotic conditions) 
  4. Experience of analysis and benchmarking of software (particularly digital health applications) 
  5. High quality publications in relevant area (such as digital health or psychiatry) in high impact journals
