Qualified Social Worker | Youth Justice Team | Gloucestershire County Council *

To be considered, it is essential that you have a recognised Social Work qualification (Social Work Degree or Diploma in Social Work) and full Social Work England registration as well as recent or significant relevant experience in a similar role.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Graduate or equivalent professional qualification e.g. criminal justice, social care, probation.
  • At least 2 years practice experience of working with vulnerable children and young people, preferably within a youth justice setting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the youth justice system, and the complex issues that affect children and young people within the youth justice system.
  • Recent experience of managing a caseload of children and young people- undertaking assessments of risk and need, developing plans, and delivering interventions that effect positive change and manage risk.
  • Knowledge and experience of managing out of court disposals and statutory court orders.
  • Excellent skills in the preparation and delivery of verbal and written reports, preferably with experience of working in Court.

Our social workers make a real difference within the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH). Every day they work with families to help children and young people who have had a difficult start in life achieve their ambitions. They listen to young people and put them at the heart of everything they do. Working in partnership with families, they equip them with the skills they need to ensure young people live in happy, healthy and safe homes.

If you are looking for a non-visiting role to practice your social work in a fast-paced environment, this will be an ideal team for you. We’re looking for individuals keen to use their creativity to deliver high quality, child-centred practices, which ensure the best outcomes for children and families. 


What you will be doing

  • You will be responsible for triaging referrals coming into the team regarding children and young people with welfare concerns.
  • In this non-case holding role, you will also be applying threshold for Universal Service, Early Help and Social Care  in a rapid and timely manner.
  • Daily, you will be dealing with professionals and parents by telephone.
  • As part of this role, you will be mentoring and coaching social workers to pro-vide a good quality service to children and young people .
  • Regularly, you will be offering supervision to Access Advisors (non-qualified members of business support staff who take initial phone calls from members of the public and professionals) to support and develop their role.
  • It will be key for you to keep accurate and detailed information that can be used by other members of the team and departments within Children Services.

What we need from you

  • We require you to be a qualified Social Worker with relevant registration to practice (SWE Social Work England).
  • You will have already successfully completed your ASYE (where qualifying since 2012) and have substantial post qualifying experience in a children’s services role.
  • Given the elements of this role you will be used to solving problems, be confident about making important decisions and are passionate about working  with children, young people and families to meet their goals and aspirations.
  • You will be able demonstrate specialist knowledge of the relevant services, including latest service developments, legislation, regulations and codes of practice.
  • Ideally you will have experience of supervision or mentoring of social workers or support staff. 

What you need to know

  • This role is for 37 hours working Monday to Friday.
  • This role is for a limited term starting from 1st August 2025 and will end 31st July 2026
  • The salary will be pro rata according to hours worked.
  • Please note that due to the nature of this role, it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained.
  • You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so you must have a full, valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle or have an alternative means of travel.
  • Business Insurance must be included in your current car insurance policy.

Interviews will take place 27th June 2025.

In the Disabled Children's Team, we are working to ensure disabled children in Swindon are appropriately safeguarded and supported to achieve their full potential, we use current research and innovative practice to ensure we achieve these goals.

The Disabled Children's safeguarding and support team is co-located at the Saltway Centre with multi agency partners. This means that we are able to provide a holistic service to disabled children, young people and their families. In Swindon we recognise that Disabled Children are more likely to be abused than their non-disabled peers, and have created a bespoke service comprised of highly motivated and specialist social workers with experience in both safeguarding and disability.

Please note that candidates living 50+ miles from Swindon are entitled to claim a flat rate of 100 per week to use towards either accommodation or mileage.
