Role: 1:1 Sign Language Tutor in School
Location: Bournemouth
Pay: £13-£14 an hour
Start date: June 2024
Contract: Fixed Term – end of next academic year
Hours: 8:30- 15:00

GSL Education are supporting a local mainstream primary school who are in search of a qualified British Sign Language Tutor who can support in-person, 1:1 with a pupil who requires additional communication support. Perhaps you have never worked within a school but you are seeking a new challenge where you can implement your skills in a profound and impactful way. This role is in-person, 8:30-15:00 Monday to Friday during the school term-time, for a fixed-term placement up until the end of the next academic year.
The role will consist of providing 1:1 support for a deaf child, tailoring the learning to best meet their needs, and contributing to creating effective resources that engages the pupil. Experience in using sign language is essential, and any experience using Makaton or other non-verbal forms of communication is desirable.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have a British Sign Language (BSL) qualification or considerable experience communicating in sign language
- Have lots of patience, be proactive and committed to providing high-quality support
- Ideally you will have prior experience working with children
- Have a strong ability to develop relationships and rapport with pupils
- Have excellent interpersonal skills
Role of a Communication Support Worker:
- Supporting the teacher with the delivery of the lesson for the 1:1 pupil, ensuring that the pupil is engaged and that communication is accessible through sign language and clear and simple spoken English
- Helping to create materials and resources for the 1:1 pupil, working closely with the teacher
- Support the pupil throughout the teacher’s input sessions
