Job Duties
Adult Education Teachers are responsible for
providing quality instruction that meet the needs of the student in
the areas of basic adult education and GED standards. Additionally, to
meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and
program certification requirements.
Position provides
individual and group instruction to male supervisees at Sussex State
Prison Complex. Successful candidate will maintain classroom,
equipment and inventories; ensure compliance with all DOC regulations;
maintain accurate records and submit timely reports; and manage and
supervise aides and students in a classroom setting.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s
degree from accredited college or university in a relevant educational
field, preferably a major or minor in high school math, science.
Licensure: Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate
Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of
Education or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without
deficiencies
Demonstrated ability to teach and engage
students (including one-on-one instruction). Demonstrated ability to
supervise students and aides in a classroom setting. Demonstrated
ability to maintain accurate records; the ability to facilitate other
instructors.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree preferably a major or minor in a relevant
educational field. Prefer experience teaching adults and or youth.
Prefer experience in a correctional or alternative education setting.
Preferer knowledge and experience of policy and procedures governing
adult education.
Licensure: Prefer Current Teaching License with
an endorsement in Adult Education, Special Education or academic
subject(s).

as Corrections Officers, Probation Officers, Tractor Trailer Drivers
and others.
