Job Title: Appraisal, Claims and Formulation Scientist

Location: Port Sunlight Research Lab

Work-Level: WL1 RH4

BACKGROUND

If you do, then you’ll want to know that Unilever’s Global Homecare Category is recruiting for its Laundry Liquids Design team at Port Sunlight, Wirral.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an exciting team and develop your skills and career working on some of the world’s biggest laundry brands such as Persil, Surf and Omo.

Understanding and meeting the needs of our consumers is at the heart of laundry product development. This role will play an important part in understanding how to formulate our laundry liquid products to perform in globally relevant wash conditions, and in developing new protocols, measures and digital tools to help us create the right innovations for the future.

Effective claims and creative benefit demonstrations tell our consumers what to expect from our products and play an important part in the consumer experience. The holder of this role will help to shape, define and support claims and product communication for our global brands.

You will work in a multi-disciplinary business environment, ensuring the delivery of high-quality technical insights and data to support our Global Innovation Portfolio. You will also act as the appraisal lead on projects, identifying the needs and co-ordinating the inputs of other skill areas as required and developing an in-depth understanding of laundry liquids formulations through working flexibly across both formulation and appraisal sciences. Modern digital methods are a key part of our current approach to formulation development. You will be expected to fully understand, utilise and contribute to the development of such methods and approaches.

JOB PURPOSE

To lead the appraisal workstreams on laundry liquids innovation activities, co-ordinating requirements and personally driving appraisal and claims work and working across both formulation development and product appraisal.

RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • To lead the appraisal work stream within innovation project teams, being responsible for the design, agreement and implementation of appraisal and claims support plans.
  • To define, lead and coordinate testing programmes, working with other team members and 3rd party organisations
  • To develop and support product claims and demonstrations, working closely with other business functions such as marketing and legal partners
  • To lead formulation development as required by project needs
  • To analyse and interpret data, providing clear conclusions and recommendations
  • To be responsible for maintaining existing quality of capabilities in skill area and to identify new opportunities via networks (internal/external)
  • To define and develop new methods and protocols
  • To extract insights from multiple sources of information and identify the opportunities for the business
  • To deputise for the appraisal manager as appropriate.
  • To use, and contribute to the development of digital tools to create, manage, interpret and exploit appraisal, performance and formulation data to drive decisions and identify insights

ALL ABOUT YOU  

KEY SKILLS

  • Proven ability to plan and manage own projects within a technical area
  • Ability to manage and communicate with stakeholders, including those from non-technical backgrounds
  • Experimental design, familiarity with statistical tools, statistical data analysis and statistical interpretation of data.
  • Ability to interpret complex data, from multiple sources, for concise, clear insights / conclusions and communication to a variety of audiences.
  • Problem solving skills with practical creativity.
  • Ability to work with in multi-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills.
  • Good organisation and time-management

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • BSc or MSc (or equivalent) in Physical Sciences (including Textiles, Physics, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry or Biochemistry).
  • Experience in an industrial or academic science area requiring measurement and data handling / analysis

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • Experience of FMCG or the detergents sector
  • Knowledge of textiles or of textiles properties measurement
  • Proven ability to work with digital methods and tools

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Occasional travel may be required
  • The job includes both laboratory and office-based work (some of which may be agile)
