Job Introduction

Who are we and what do we do?

We are the Learning team for the BBC Proms and London-based BBC Orchestras and Choirs.  We produce high-quality, creative learning experiences and content which offer as many people as possible the chance to engage with the music we make at the BBC. We are a team of people who love music and are committed to nurturing talent and championing engagement with live music. In line with the BBC’s strategic objectives and the needs of music education in the UK, the team works to the following vision and aims:

Our Learning programme aims to inspire a love of orchestral and choral music for the widest possible audience - we work with people on all kinds of musical journeys and prioritise working with those who may not see an obvious pathway into music as a listener, performer or creator.

We aim to:

  • Provide inclusive access to orchestral and choral music for participants and audiences which reflect the diversity of the UK and London population (prioritising gender, ethnicity, disability and socio-economic backgrounds)
  • Nurture and showcase musical talent of the future through practical engagement with the BBC and its broadcast platforms
  • Support and amplify the work of the music education sector through partnership and collaboration
  • Champion collaboration between our departments to maximise value for our audiences

Our programme includes national education and talent schemes BBC Young Composer, BBC Open Music and BBC Ten Pieces, as well as work with targeted communities across the UK. As part of the BBC’s move to a new, purpose built music studio at East Bank on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, our team are responsible for developing partnerships and community engagement programmes that connect with our new local community and deliver on the BBC’s strategic objectives.  Our programmes include large-scale live broadcast events, digital content and events, small-scale community engagement activity, competitions, training and development schemes and audience development programmes.

The BBC Proms is the biggest classical music festival in the world. We run over 100 live events over 2 months in the summer at the Royal Albert Hall in London and venues around the UK. Nearly everything we do is broadcast across BBC Radio, TV and online. We are a creative, innovative festival that connects with audiences around the UK and across the globe.
You would be part of a dynamic Proms team that looks after Live Events, Marketing, Learning, Communications, Publications and Business.

In any single week at the BBC Proms you could be working on events like a London Symphony Orchestra Prom with Sir Simon Rattle, a Northern Soul Prom, a Horrible Histories Prom, a City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Prom, a Chineke! Prom and the BBC Orchestras and Choirs. Click  here  to see a taste of the Proms in 2023.

The BBC has 5 professional orchestras, two choruses and a professional choir, the BBC Singers. You will also work closely with the BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
