Definition of Class

This position develops, coordinates, and implements programs to support current and prospective scholarship and other undergraduate students in a school.  The incumbent provides strategic leadership for scholarship programs and related outreach and student services initiatives, including career planning and professional development.  The incumbent is also responsible for scholarship financial administration. The incumbent makes decisions exercising discretion and independent judgment.

 

The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College invites applications for the position of Assistant to the Dean for Student Engagement.  The Assistant to the Dean for Student Engagement will coordinate and implement programs to support current and prospective scholarship and other undergraduate students in the Honors College.  The Assistant to the Dean will provide strategic leadership for scholarship programs and related outreach and student services initiatives, including career planning and professional development.  To be considered for this position, an applicant should have at least a master's degree in a related field and five years of experience related to the described duties.  For further information about the position and to apply, visit careers.olemiss.edu .

Examples of Work Performed
  • Participates in the review and evaluation of scholarship applications, maintains records of scholarship recipients, and meets regularly with scholarship students individually and as part of their cohorts. 
  • Engages in donor stewardship to support scholarship programs and other related initiatives.  Serves as advisor to Dean and Associate Deans on matters related to scholarship programs and academic excellence.  Represents the school internally and externally, including on university committees related to scholarships.
  • Coordinates co-curricular programming for specific cohorts of scholarship holders, and develops programming for all undergraduate students in a school, to include social programming, alumni and VIP visits, and visits by representatives of special programs such as Mississippi Teacher Corps, Rural Physicians/Rural Dentists Program, and other government agencies or private businesses.
  • Coordinates with other schools and departments to identify and develop internship, externship, and co-op opportunities for scholarship students and other undergraduates in a school.  Advises students on career/co-op matters, interview preparation, resume review, etc.
  • Serves on fellowship awards committee.
  • Advises the student leadership council and provides oversight and guidance to other student organizations within the school.
  • Liaises with Career Center on placement and graduate tracking. Promotes job opportunities to students and advises students regarding resume and interview skills.
  • Serves as a member of the school’s communications team to develop marketing materials and implement communication plans to aid in recruitment of new students, corporate partners and alumni engagement. 
  • Collaborate with the school’s development officer to plan and execute an annual scholarship event for scholars and donors. 
  • Serves as co-director of new student orientation programs for incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Essential Functions

These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring department.

  1. Develops, implements, and manages various programs to provide professional development opportunities for undergraduate students.
  2. Coordinates co-curricular programming for specific cohorts of scholarship holders, and coordinates student programming and alumni/VIP visits with students.
  3. Manages financial scholarship award activities and administration.
  4. Supervises and provides guidance to student organizations and programs.
Minimum Education/Experience

Education: Master’s Degree in a related field from an accredited four-year college or university.

AND

Experience: Five (5) years of experience related to the above described duties.
