Overview

The role

 

As a part of continued growth IQUW is seeking to strengthen central Analytics function and looking to hire a Research Analyst to focus on a wide range of research projects related to Man-made perils with the goal of strengthening internal view of risk. It is a unique opportunity to work in a rapidly evolving and fast-growing environment, where research insight is critically valuable and at the core of decision making.

 

This position will report into Research Lead and will be part of a wider Exposure Management Team. The role will be focussed on developing best-in-class view of risk by interrogating deterministic scenarios, catastrophe models, recent catastrophe experience and solving challenges insurance market is posed against. The results of the findings will be communicated to internal stakeholders and used to evaluate and build a range of deterministic and probabilistic tools.

 

 

Key responsibilities  

  • Supporting the Research Lead, broader Exposure Management team and Underwriting teams to ensure catastrophe risk is well understood, measured, and clearly communicated across the business.
  • The role will focus on supporting the development of IQUW’s in-house “View of Risk” for all man-made perils globally. Conducting research projects, outcomes of which lie at the core of decision making and pricing. Smart implementation of in-house “View of Risk” will ensure is used consistently for pricing, exposure monitoring, and group risk management.
  • The role will involve development and research of applicable datasets and methodologies. Evaluation of datasets and catastrophe models, and a subsequent adjustment where necessary.
  • Analysis of historical loss data. Fitting statistical models to historical experience. Challenging assumptions and stress testing of models that calculate loss potential. Bringing together diverse data sets to create predictive models.
  • Active monitoring of state of the science related to man-made catastrophe risk as well as overall risk landscape.
  • Monitoring evolution of man-made catastrophe events globally to support Reserving and Claims teams.

 

Essential qualifications, skills and experience  

  • Strong analytical, quantitative, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Curiosity and eagerness to learn
  • Ability to work independently and also collaboratively with other business units to achieve common objectives
  • Organised self-starter, with drive and commitment; able to finish work with little supervision
  • Critically assessing the status quo, thinking outside of the box to build a view of Risk that gives us an advantage
  • Strong programming skills and experience with tools to manipulate large data sets, preferably R or Python
  • Strong written and face to face communication skills
  • Have or develop a good network outside of IQUW related to their core area of expertise

 

Desirable behavioural attributes  

  • PhD or Masters degree
  • 1-3 years of experience in the insurance market
  • Previous experience in designing deterministic scenarios or using or evaluation catastrophe models. Understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and have experience with validation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships
