Full Job Description

Metaphore Biotechnologies (previously known as Flagship Labs 72 or FL72) is an early-stage biotechnology company building the premier computationally driven bioplatform for the intelligent design of molecular mimicry. Our platform integrates massively parallel assays with machine-learning-guided protein engineering to navigate the combinatorial space of molecular interactions and design protein-protein interfaces with exquisite precision. This capability unlocks best-in-class monoclonal antibodies, next-generation vaccines, and novel therapeutic paradigms across multiple categories of chronic disease.

We are currently located in Kendall Square, Cambridge, in the state-of-the-art facilities of Flagship Labs and will likely move to a larger facility around CambridgeSide.

Metaphore Biotechnologies is a product of Flagship Pioneering’s venture creation engine, which has also given rise to companies such as Moderna Therapeutics (NASDAQ: MRNA), Rubius Therapeutics (NASDAQ: RUBY), and Editas Medicines (NASDAQ: EDIT). Since Flagship’s founding in 2000, the firm has originated and fostered the development of more than 100 scientific ventures, resulting in over $34 billion in aggregate value, 500+ issued patents, and more than 50 clinical trials for novel therapeutic agents.

The opportunity

Metaphore Bio is seeking a highly-motivated Co-Op to join our Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) team at our laboratory in Cambridge, MA. This individual will support our state-of-the-art NGS, additional analytical platforms, and automated analysis pipelines. The successful candidate will be expected to develop proficiency in NGS support protocols, including DNA isolation, qPCR, sample quality-control techniques and other molecular biology techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development of a ground-breaking platform for cellular and molecular analysis by establishing robust procedures for NGS techniques and protocols.
  • Perform, optimize, and improve various nucleic acid extraction platforms from various tissue types.
  • Execute experiments, analyze raw data, produce QC reports, and document experimental results within project deadlines.
  • Prepare NGS libraries, conduct final QC, and operate Illumina sequencers.
  • Participate in the planning and design of new experiments.
  • Assist in the development of laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and independently troubleshoot any issues.
  • Keep accurate records in accordance with standard laboratory procedures, study protocols, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in laboratory science, medical technology, bioinformatics, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Computational Skills: Knowledge of Linux and familiarity of scripting in Python and statistical programming using R strongly preferred.
  • Openness to learn and master new research techniques and approaches.
  • Self-driven, highly-motivated, and a team player with a proven ability to multitask.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with colleagues and staff from different scientific disciplines and coordinate work based on company goals.
  • Competence in developing, preparing, and implementing laboratory SOPs.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and dedication to maintaining the highest standards of research quality.
  • Familiarity with experimental molecular biology.
  • Experience with nucleic acid isolation from cells, PCR, qPCR, and other basic molecular biology techniques is preferred

Values and Behaviors:
