Founded in August 2012, International Women’s Initiative (IWI) is a Community Interest Company (CIC) working towards the promotion of women's rights and gender equality around the world. We believe that we will achieve this through the creation of volunteer and professional networks and the provision of a platform for engaging in constructive commentary and ideas-sharing in the field. Funds raised by the organisation are used to support and resource partnerships with community-based organisations or projects. We are currently focusing on advancing our Safe Birthing Programme which seeks to reduce the high levels of maternal mortality in the Amolatar District, Uganda. 

Job Description

Duties:  This is a VOLUNTEER POSITION reporting directly to the Director of Communications. The Communications Research Assistant will be expected to contribute towards raising awareness of IWI's mission and projects. The Communications Research Assistant will implement promotional ideas and activities in accordance with the Communications strategy to publicise and promote IWI activities for exposure to prominent media audiences and individual followers or subscribers.

Time Commitment: The minimum commitment is an average of 10-15 hours per week including one on one meetings with the Director of Communications, as needed. This is a volunteer position.

Principal Duties:

  • Research, write and design monthly newsletters with an aim to increase subscribers to the newsletter. Newsletters generally include updates on IWI activities and programmes, significant news and events regarding gender equality, IWI staff updates, IWI Blog and publication highlights.
  • Contribute current content for posting on IWI’s social media accounts, ensuring that regular, frequent postings are made by the Social Media Team.
  • Proofread content for printed publications and online media
  • Draft press releases and blog entries, as needed
  • Develop and promote our fundraising efforts (working closely with the Fundraising Team)
  • Research gender and development news
  • Developing new ideas and approaches to marketing

Qualifications

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently, with guidance
  • Excellent writing and drafting skills in English
  • Ability to copyedit, proofread and produce perfect copy for publication in English
  • Good interpersonal skills- ability to take direction or criticism as needed, offer needed suggestions and identify areas in need of improvement with sensitivity
  • Great organizational and communications skills
  • Ability to express passion and enthusiasm about IWI's core values
  • Ability to collaborate and work with colleagues remotely, primarily over email, including ability to share responsibilities, communicate about tasks to be completed and individual capacity.
