The Virginia Department of State Police is seeking qualified applicants for a Computer Systems Senior Engineer position in the Information Technology Division, located in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The Department of State Police is a law enforcement agency dedicated to preserving law and order, and enforcing criminal traffic and regulatory laws. The Information Technology Division is responsible for the administration and management of Virginia State Police’s enterprise computing infrastructure. This is an Exempt position; therefore, this position is excluded from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act due to the nature of duties and job responsibilities. DUTIES : · Maximizes performance and morale through effective leadership. Supervises assigned staff by establishing priorities, evaluating performance, assessing developmental needs, and correcting substandard performance and discipline issues as they occur. Communicates clearly and concisely with staff, and encourages staff to maintain open communications. Effectively identifies and resolves personnel conflicts . Communicates safety issues with employees to ensure a safe workplace. Continuity of operations is maintained through cross training and development of current desk procedures . · Monitors, analyzes, and maintains all enterprise class server systems. Interfaces with system users and vendor support personnel to resolve software problems. Develops and maintains recovery strategies and procedures. Maintains IBM SSO infrastructure. Ensures security of computing environments. Keeps abreast of new features and issues to aid systems staff in patch management. Contributes to identifying and fulfilling daily, weekly and monthly goals of the Engineering unit. Identifies and incorporates where applicable latest techniques and trends in Distributed Open systems platforms. Sets up and manages DR hardware/software environments. · Proactively supervises staff responsible for Unix, Windows, RHEL , and WebSphere environments. Ensures proper coordination with other IT sections and business units. Periodically reviews the IT Strategic Plan for accuracy and provides updates to management. Ensures development and engineering tasks are accomplished within specified time frames and within budget. Proactively manages budgets that support section’s personnel and projects. Assists with development of grant applications. Assists with development of procurement documents and vendor contracts for consulting staff, software, hardware, and maintenance. Verifies that systems are implemented/modified in accordance with established standards. Verifies that testing is adequate to ensure that all conditions are tested and systems are working as designed. Ensures that procedures for change control are followed. Ensures that all documentation is filed properly and that a fallback position is maintained. · Supports, monitors and maintain; Nagios, Enterprise class disk, storage array and WebSphere. · Installs and tests operating system patches and upgrades using proper change management procedures. Provides documentation of operating system patches and upgrades and work with other system engineers to coordinate this support.

Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS : · Thorough Knowledge of performance monitoring, system testing, software patch Installation and testing; data security, backup, recovery, and restart techniques; procedures for backing up and restoring enterprise class servers; VMware vSphere, DNS , LDAP , Web services, WebSphere, cable management, jumpstart technologies, Kick Start technologies; and Shell Scripting techniques is required. · Previous Supervisory or team-lead experience is preferred. · Skill in using computers and Microsoft office Applications and Software. · Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot enterprise servers and be familiar with performance tuning and monitoring; to translate user requests into actionable UNIX related; to automate routine tasks; to write Shell and Perl scripts; to research and find technical solutions; to prioritize and delegate tasks; to understand and satisfy VSP data security; to provide documentation and training when required; to communicate effectively in English orally and in writing; to work independently on assigned projects; and to develop effective working relationships with various levels of agency, state and vendor personnel. · Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or related field preferred. · An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills and abilities may substitute for this education and experience. · Extensive experience in Information Technology (IT) and Windows Server; troubleshooting UNIX problems; physical and logical concepts of UNIX file structures; Red Hat Enterprise Linux, standard networking protocols; medium to large-scale UNIX environments; OS upgrades, patch installation and testing; providing technical support; and UNIX scripting required. · Experience as an architect or design engineer is beneficial. · Exposure to Java and Web Services and WebSphere preferred. · Experience in Sun Solaris 10/11, Solaris virtualization (zones / LDOMS ), Enterprise backup solution (Netbackup), Fujitsu SAN hardware, NetApp SAN storage, Oracle Sparc systems, Brocade switch, Quantum tape library, x86 hardware platform, and IBM SSO preferred.
