Data Journalist
Job Details
Full Job Description
Focaldata is seeking a data journalist to combine data analysis with public opinion polling to drive original reporting on elections, politics and wider society.
You'll be responsible for running polls using our quantitative and qualitative research tools and then analyzing data to uncover trends. You'll work alone or in collaboration with our Chief Research Officer researchers and data scientists.
You’ll play a critical role in making Focaldata famous over the coming years, notably during this upcoming election cycle where we’ll be looking to provide original insights into elections in the UK, US, EU and further afield.
What you’ll be doing
- Identify stories where data analysis can drive reporting and press interest
- Design and run your polls using the Focaldata platform to collect data for analysis
- Creatively source other data, by scraping, merging, or other methods
- Own and develop relationships with journalists to get coverage and distribution for your stories
- Create high-quality charts and other artefacts that will help make content as shareable and impactful as possible
- Turn your findings into headlines and sharp lead paragraphs
- Own our polling and analytical content grid and be responsible for prioritising what trends and issues we focus on
Who you are: skills and experience
- A portfolio of data work demonstrating editorial judgment, rigor and ambition
- Experience analysing public opinion data
- Ability to create publication-ready charts and visuals
- A minimum of 2 years of experience extracting insight from data
- Expertise in R or Python
- Experience in writing first-class copy
Who you are: mindset
- You are a “doer” with a high motor — you’ll probably be covering more ground than you have in previous roles and you’ll need a bias for action
- You are happy to fail fast and learn how to improve — and love experimentation
- You have a growth mindset: you’re keen to learn new tools, new techniques, new domains.
