Full Job Description

Oxford Nanopore Technologies is headquartered at the Oxford Science Park outside Oxford, UK, with satellite offices and a commercial presence in many global locations across the US, APAC and Europe.

Oxford Nanopore employs from multiple subject areas including nanopore science, molecular biology and applications, informatics, engineering, electronics, manufacturing and commercialisation. The management team, led by CEO Dr Gordon Sanghera, has a track record of delivering disruptive technologies to the market.

Oxford Nanopore’s sequencing platform is the only technology that offers real-time analysis, in fully scalable formats from pocket to population scale, that can analyse native DNA or RNA and sequence any length of fragment to achieve short to ultra-long read lengths. Our goal is to enable the analysis of any living thing, by anyone, anywhere!

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Protein Sequencing Team as a Data Scientist  to expand the capabilities of our platform from DNA and RNA into protein analysis. As a core member of this early-phase research team, this individual will have a pivotal role in developing nanopore-based protein sequencing by building novel analysis tools to support the interpretation of electrical data obtained from nanopore experiments, and supporting experimental projects across the team from conception to interpretation.

The details…

  • The Data Scientist will develop methods for exploratory analyses on a range of early-phase protein sequencing methods, including deploying signal processing or machine learning algorithms, identifying ways to iteratively improve the chemistry.
  • The ability to communicate with experimental scientists to propose a hypothesis, help plan an experiment, provide custom analysis to examine a dataset and refine the hypothesis is crucial, along with a strong understanding of the scientific method.

What we are looking for…

Essential:

  • Masters (or equivalent industry experience) in Life, Physical or Mathematical Sciences (biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, or a related field).
  • Proficient in python programming for developing novel analytical tools
  • Ability to visualize and interrogate large datasets using python (pandas, numpy, matplotlib) or R
  • Solid understanding of applied statistics and signal processing methods
  • Experience of operating in a Linux environment and workflow management (bash-based scripting or snakemake/nextflow, etc.)

Desirable:

  • A sound knowledge of protein biochemistry or a willingness to learn key concepts
  • Familiarity with collaborative tools (such as git) and experience of explaining analytical concepts to non-specialist collaborators
  • Experience in handling next-generation sequencing data and familiarity of existing bioinformatics tools for data analysis
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms and processes
