Job Description

This role will lead development and implementation of the Turner & Townsend privacy and data protection compliance programme as well as support other activities within our broader Global Ethics and Compliance programme.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead Turner & Townsends privacy and data protection programme as part of our Risk Management function and our Ethics and Corporate Compliance Programmes. This role will initially focus on supporting our UK business, including acting as the focal point for all data privacy matters, but we expect that it will also support our global regions as the UK programme develops.
  • Be responsible for developing and maturing all aspects of the privacy and data protection programme, including strategy, implementation, and outreach.
  • Work with our Regional teams to support implementing and adapting the privacy and data protection programme to address market-based risks, overseeing regional resources/outside counsel as required
  • Support broader Ethics and Compliance initiatives and compliance programme development, working with the Director, Risk (Ethics and Corporate Compliance)
  • Advise and collaborate with internal clients on compliance strategies to mitigate assessed risks, including operational as well as other Business Services teams, such as HR, Business Generation, the CR, IT and Digital Transformation Programme teams.
  • Create and deliver training, awareness and communications programs.
  • Advise on Privacy, Data Protection and other Ethics and Corporate Compliance matters.
  • Assist with mergers and acquisitions due diligence, where necessary.
  • Monitor and advise on emerging legal changes and regulatory developments impacting Turner & Townsend.
  • Lead engagement with outside counsel on Privacy and Data Protection matters/advice as required.
  • Develop audit programme and arrange compliance audits/perform compliance reviews.

The Privacy and Data Protection Director will report to the Director Risk (Ethics and Corporate Compliance), based in Leeds.  They will primarily interface with:

  • Other members of the Risk Management team, including the Director & Global Head of Risk Management;
  • The operational side of the business, including the Regional MD’s RFD’s and Regional RM Board Reps;
  • our Business Services teams, such as the IT and Digital Transformation functions; and
  • the COO and CFO.

They will also be expected to liaise with Turner & Townsend’s business advisors (lawyers, insurance brokers, etc) and CBRE (60% owners of Turner & Townsend) regarding compliance matters.

Qualifications
  • Ideally to be qualified to practice law in the UK or EU, although Privacy specific qualifications will also be considered;
  • Demonstrable experience of delivering a Privacy and Data Protection Compliance programme, ideally within an international business;
  • Be able to work flexibly across other time zones when necessary;
  • Efficiently and effectively communicate complex legal topics to non-lawyers;
  • Ability to manage self and others;
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral), including sensitivity to cultural differences across a global business; and
  • Self-motivated, pro-active and resilient.
