We are looking for a motivated ecologist to join our Montgomery Canal team to deliver a significant canal restoration project. The project is a long standing priority for Canal & River Trust, Powys County Council, UK Government and partners. This is one of the largest canal restoration projects currently underway in the UK. This exciting post will be largely based around the Montgomery Canal close to Llanymynech. We already have d redging work underway with the main bridge and reserve construction works to commence during 2024.

 

Part of a multidisciplinary team you will be instrumental in developing and delivering survey briefs, working with consultants, partners , contractors and other stakeholders to secure relevant permission s (including planning permission and Habitats Regulations Assessments) develop ecological improvement plans and support delivery of the construction work.

 

You will be passionate and enthusiastic. You will have experience with undertaking ecological work on civil engineering projects, managing your own budgets and workload. You will be in a unique environment, within a specialist team working with the delivery directorate for the Trust.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Key accountabilities :

  • Manage Environmental Management System (EMS) including its environmental appraisal procedures for the project.
  • Identify implications of environmental legislation for project activities and provide practical advice on necessary measures to secure permissions.
  • Provide support and advice on waste management, contaminated land and water quality management for project activities to mitigate potential adverse environmental impacts and identify and deliver opportunities for appropriate environmental enhancements.
  • Undertake and/or oversee environmental /ecological surveys implementing consistent standards for data management.
  • Work with other colleagues within the environment team and others to respond to environmental issues and incidents.
  • Liaise with external regulators and stakeholders (including National Resources Wales and local Planning Authorities)
  • Deliver training on aspects of environmental protection and management to Trust employees, contractors and volunteers.
  • Contribute to marketing & media opportunities to generate positive publicity for environmental management activities carried out by the Trust.
  • Work with volunteers on a variety of environmental initiatives.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:

 

  • Practical understanding of current environmental legislation
  • Proven experience in environmental protection and management, resolving complex issues and devising processes to ensure and maintain legal compliance.
  • Knowledge of aquatic flora and fauna, protect species surveys and planning process, EIA requirements.
  • Understanding and experience of the application of the Habitat Regulations (desirable).
  • Experience in delivering open water habitat/reedbeds (desirable).
  • Broad knowledge of environmental good practice.
  • Proven experience in the application of practical knowledge within a business environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Membership of relevant professional institute (CIWEM, IEMA. IEEM etc).
  • Valid driving licence is essential.

In addition to the specialist expertise and professional qualifications you bring, it is also essential that you have an ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders across the organisation and wider, and communicate effectively to protect and promote the Trusts’ waterways environment and ecology and enjoy working with volunteers and community groups.
