Maureen Joy
Charter School is seeking an elementary teacher for the 2024-2025
school year.
Thank you for your
interest in joining our team at Maureen Joy Charter School. We strive
to employ a diverse cadre of teachers and staff who are anti-racist
and equity-driven; collaborate enthusiastically with others; and find
joy in teaching, learning, and growing.
Maureen Joy Charter School is a K-8th grade public charter
school located in Old East Durham, North Carolina. It was founded in
1997 by a group of dedicated community members who wanted to create a
new vision for public schools in Durham. It has grown from a small
number of children and teachers in a church basement to over 620
scholars and more than 100 employees. Our school is tuition-free and
open to the public, with admission determined by a random lottery. We
believe all children can succeed regardless of race, neighborhood, or
the income of their families and the children at our school have
demonstrated this time and again.
Our elementary school teachers lay the
foundation for our students' academic success and character
development by:
- Planning thoughtfully and
teaching joyously:
You’ll adapt our rigorous, standards-based curriculum to
meet the particular needs of your students, thinking about both how
to scaffold rigorous learning and how to infuse your students’
learning with joy. You’ll engage in shared content planning, based
on provided lesson plans for core content areas. You’ll partner with
students to foster a mutual love of learning and growing.
-
Using data intentionally:
You are constantly
thinking about how to help students achieve ambitious goals. To track
progress towards goals, you’ll analyze academic and classroom culture
data to inform your instruction and target focus areas for your
students.
- Investing in your own learning:
You
are committed to your own professional development through
collaboration, reflection, giving and receiving feedback, and
professional learning. You'll participate in ongoing professional
development that aligns to our school goals and your development as a
teacher on our team. You'll partner with your instructional coach in
reflecting and refining practice with regular observation and feedback
conversations, lesson plan feedback, and data analysis.
-
Building a strong culture in your classroom:
We
know that building a positive, engaging, and supportive environment
for all students is an essential part of their learning and
development. You'll set clear academic and behavior expectations for
students to create a positive environment and maximize learning for
all, including students with learning and behavioral differences.
-
Meeting professional expectations:
You are
intentional about staying organized so you can work efficiently on
teams, be prepared for teaching every day, and meet deadlines with
high quality work. You are committed to being an effective teacher,
communicator, and problem-solver.
Coaching :
Every
teacher at Maureen Joy, regardless of prior teaching experience, is
partnered with an instructional coach who has demonstrated a track
record of excellence in the classroom. Your coach observes and meets
with you regularly as a part of the school's observation/feedback
cycle. Coaches also facilitate data meetings to help adjust your
future instruction so you can best meet your students' academic needs
the next day or week. Our overall coaching model focuses on
improvement over evaluation and we take joy in seeing both our
scholars AND teachers grow throughout the year.
