Job Title: Engineer – Rotating Electrics

Salary: £43,700 + per annum dependent upon experience

Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Rotating Electrics Engineer within our CAT Electronics European Division. Based in Peterborough, the Division works with all CAT’s European facilities to develop and apply advanced technology to the control of our highly integrated engines and machines. With unrivalled levels of vertical integration within the industry, our control systems help to maximise the customer value and efficiency of Caterpillar’s end products, whilst minimising owning and operating costs.

The successful applicant for this position will be join the Engine Systems Team and will take responsibility for the selection, development, validation and integration of starter motors and alternators for various Caterpillar and Perkins brand engine ranges. Each project offers the opportunity to work on the latest rotating electrics technologies, supporting the development of engines designed to meet the latest emissions legislation, with world-class levels of quality and reliability. You will be part of a small, friendly team working together to deliver programmes that are critical to the long-term success of a respected, global company.

Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but not limited to:

  • Working directly with clients and customers to understand and document component requirements for a starting and charging system.

  • Working with world class suppliers to identify, source and validate components to meet programme and application requirements.

  • Planning and executing the development of components and starting/charging systems for the application on Caterpillar machines and engines.

  • Conducting analysis on components and systems to identify and address design risks and determine validation needs.

  • Working with worldwide engine and machine teams to plan and execute validation activities.

  • Conducting component and system design reviews to obtain ‘buy-in’ from the business to selected components, designs and suppliers.

  • Monitoring Rotating Electrics system and component quality levels against targets, identifying improvement opportunities and leading projects to address customer issues and implement improvements.

  • Supporting New Technology Introduction projects for Rotating Electrics and Starting/Charging Systems.

  • Keeping peers, team leader and management up to date with progress against planned activities.

  • Through this role, the successful candidate will have an excellent opportunity to take part in, and have significant responsibility for the end-to-end development process for modern rotating electric components and starting/charging systems. This gives our employees true product ownership and the opportunity to see their products through from concept to volume production.

Experience and Qualifications Required

  • Strong technical background.

  • Must have experience in engine component development, gained on starters and / or alternators.

  • Sound knowledge of starting and charging systems on modern engines and vehicles is essential.

  • Knowledge and demonstrable experience on the creation and execution of a validation program to mitigate component and system risks.             

  • Experience in component integration onto modern engines, machines and vehicles.    

  • The ability to plan, prioritise and organise, thus facilitating the successfully management and execution of a number of projects at one time.

  • Very good teaming and communication skills

  • Good initiative, self-starter

  • Ability to build strong working relations

  • Provide focus on the customer and their needs

  • Innovative solutions in problem solving
