Norfolk State University (NSU), a historically black university
invites, candidates for the nine-month, full-time, tenure track
position of Assistant Professor of Journalism, for its
ACEJMC-accredited Department of Mass Communications and Journalism.
The position is expected to begin August 2024, review of applications
will begin November 10, 2023, and continue until the position is
filled.
The department currently offers a Bachelor of Science
degree with a track in general broadcasting and journalism and also
houses the Master of Arts in Media and Communication graduate program.
The department has active NBS-AERho and PRSSA Chapters and supports
the campus newspaper, The Spartan Echo, WNSB-FM, and CCTV WNSU-TV. The
university is located in a top-fifty media market.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in introduction to media, news writing, cross-platform journalism, and other journalism-related courses.
- Engage in exemplary teaching, effective student advising, and opportunities to conduct research and grantsmanship.
- Contribute to scholarly endeavors and stay abreast of scholarship and new trends in the field.
- Regularly attend and participate in departmental, college and
University required meetings and
events. - Collegially
engage with faculty and staff and adhere to deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Mass Communications or related disciplines.
- Teaching experience in journalism or mass media courses.
- Research experience in journalism topics.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional media experience relevant to the position.
- Demonstrated skill in distance learning via online modalities.
- A record of professional integrity, collegiality, and commitment to diversity.
- Experience
working with students from diverse backgrounds and a
demonstrated
commitment to improving access to higher education for all students regardless of
background.
