Job Duties

Norfolk State University's (NSU) Department of Visual and Performing Arts Drama & Theatre Division, invites applicants for a tenure-track full-time Assistant Professor of Drama and Theatre in the discipline of Musical Theatre; the selected candidate shall begin August 2024. Review of applications begins November 9, 2023, and the position remains open until filled.

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach 6 credit hours per semester in Voice and Diction, Applied Voice, Special Projects, Intro to Theatre and/or other areas as qualified. 
  • Maintain high levels of professional development, research and creative activities, and service. 
  • Serve as the rehearsal accompanist, music director & conductor for productions as assigned for 6 hours of release time including serving as Keyboard 1 conductor/player as well as voice and speech coach for productions as assigned. 
  • Produce cabarets and recitals with student performing. 
  • Regularly attend afternoon, evening, and weekend rehearsals and performances.

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.F.A. in Musical Theatre or related field or doctorate in Collaborative Piano/Vocal Coaching or related field.
  • Experience conducting musical theatre productions.
  • Ability to sightread music, read charts, transpose, and accompany musical theatre productions.
  • Experience with African-American theatrical works

Preferred Qualifications

  • University-level teaching experience in voice
  • Ability to supervise university crew and students
  • Excellent leadership and personnel management skills with a collaborative and open attitude
  • Membership in discipline-specific professional unions and organizations
  • Skill and ability to serve as dialect coach for productions
  • Training and experience with composing and/or arranging works in the musical theatre style
