Full Job Description

Metro brings news, sport, analysis, features, opinion, and everything in between to a fast-growing global audience and we’re now looking for a talented Gaming Social Video Journalist to join our London team.


You’ll be joining a high-performing social video team during an exciting period of development as Metro.co.uk’s short form vertical video offering expands. You’ll be responsible for sourcing, producing and delivering daily and weekly gaming video content with a focus on TikTok, Facebook video, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat. As such, this role requires knowledge of every major social platform. Ideal candidates will have a great understanding of the gaming industry including consoles, games, streamers and more as this is the area you will be specialising in. A knowledge of Metro’s GameCentral coverage and tone of voice is essential.


Your fingers must be on the pulse of online conversation. You should be able to spot a new story or rising trend and act quickly to generate engaging vertical video content around this. The ability to create and present a compelling narrative is a must.


Role Responsibilities


  • Monitor trends and pitch story, video or format ideas for our social channels
  • Research and produce scripts for social video with an understanding of the key narrative of a story
  • Script, present, edit and deliver daily and weekly short form video content across social channels
  • Willingness to appear on-screen
  • Source and re-edit the best and most engaging content, making sure clips are sourced in a legal manner and credited appropriately
  • Film high-quality, original content remotely and in-person, including with contributors and talent
  • Create headlines, social copy and metadata for posting of videos across all platforms
  • Use data and analytics to inform decisions on pitches and future content
  • Understand all of the major social platforms and how video should be re-packaged and optimised across platforms
  • Contribute ideas for new video formats
  • Understand legal covenants such as the UK Editors’ Code of Practice, media law, copyright law and editorial guidelines in the UK and globally
  • Help to build a strong Metro.co.uk voice across our video output
  • Work with editorial teams to align social video content with overall content strategy


Key Skills and Experience


  • Experience working within a news/media environment at a local or national level
  • A strong news sense, with a creative approach to storytelling
  • An understanding of the vertical video environment and where it is heading
  • Experience in scripting, producing, editing and delivering vertical video content
  • Filming experience preferred
  • Experience of using data and analytics to inform output decisions
  • Ability to edit at speed using Adobe Premiere Pro and other editing suites
  • Adobe After Effects experience preferred
  • Understanding of the UK Editors’ Code of Practice, media and copyright law
  • Willingness to work in a dynamic, fast-paced 24/7 news environment with flexibility to work unsociable hours as and when required
