Description

Carbo Culture is seeking a Head of Biomass Strategy to join the team!

Would you want to take ownership of a critical component of carbon removal at scale in a growing company?

Carbo Culture is a carbon removal technology developer on a mission to help mitigate climate change by permanently removing CO2. We’re headquartered in Helsinki with operations in the UK and the US. Our team is largely remote, and we meet for team or company wide summits.

As the Head of Biomass Strategy Lead, you’ll lead the development and contracting strategy for biomass sourcing for Biochar Carbon removal projects. This includes negotiating and procuring biomass purchases, finding new areas of innovation, and evaluating the technical, commercial, sustainability, and ESG viability of different biomass solutions. Passionate about solutions, you’ll provide thought leadership on how we procure large volumes over multi-years and ensure projects are workable once handed over to development. The role will also be the procurement lead, with an end-to-end responsibility for contract and partnership negotiations, price, delivery and anything else related from having biomass arrive at our facilities daily to a ten-year strategy for biomass pricing.

We’re looking for someone who understands the biomass market well, who is a driven self-starter who thrives in an area with little direction or oversight, and who can be relied on as a Carbo Culture representative in international, often complex negotiations. You can effectively communicate and establish mutually beneficial partnership models.

You are experienced in leading projects, you’re a fast learner, great collaborator and love working in a startup team in a hands-on environment. This role is remote for now, and working within European time zones. Regular travel to our demo site / next sites, as well as partners’ sites expected in the future.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop biomass sourcing strategies and work with our R&D and project development teams to evaluate technical and commercial viability in a lean, iterative manner
  • Negotiation and procurement lead for biomass purchases, procuring tens of thousands of tonnes today, hundreds in the coming years, etc
  • Find new areas of innovation and work with tech team to establish a 10-yr biomass strategy
  • Lead the search for globally the best biomasses with various price, quality and biodiversity criteria
  • Lead sustainability / ESG / quality evaluations of different biomass strategies
  • Lead LCA analysis of different biomass strategies (in collaboration with Engineering and other experts)
  • Carry out anything needed: research, data collection, interpretation and analysis and turn your insights into actionable strategy input
  • Contribute to science and customer value communications and marketing materials development, technical sales presentations and customer relationships development
  • Train our team in latest research and findings and identify opportunities
  • Building and managing long term strategic relationships with feedstock suppliers

Requirements

Your experience and skills

  • Experience in high-paced environments and delivering beyond expectations
  • Experience in high-volume raw material sourcing
  • Strong networks in relevant industries: biomass and or energy
  • Project development experience in a relevant industry in multimillion scale

Your characteristics to bring to the team

  • You don’t settle for mediocre
  • Always on the hunt for a better deal, a new way of doing things, improving the current
  • Ability to act without direction and bring deals forth
  • You’re a self-starter, builder and can think on your feet
  • You are eager to learn
  • If work needs to be done, you’ll do it even if it’s not your responsibility
  • You are deeply passionate about climate tech and about working for a live-able planet in 2050

Not necessary, but we’d love it:

  • Experience working in a startup-like, fast-moving organization
  • Experience in a leadership / critical position
  • You’ve seen what “great” looks like in a company
