Location: London or Salford 

Due to the hybrid nature of the teams, we require the successful candidate to be based in one of the above BBC offices to work from the office two days per week

Job Introduction

Imagine working in a team with a similar scope to Netflix, Spotify, Sky Sports and the Huffington Post. Working across the breadth of the BBC, this is the range and interest offered by this role. 

This role is a leadership role within the Data function of the BBC’s customer division, which in turn sits within the larger Audience Team.  The role reports into the Director: Customer Data and Analysis. The team works across all areas of the BBC, including Content, Product, Media and Strategy, providing vital data-driven direction to the BBC’s most critical work. 
 

Main Responsibilities

The Head of Data – Content Analytics heads up a team of 12 analysts who are embedded into divisional Audience Teams such as TV, Radio, News, and Nations. This embedded model means this team is involved in projects across the BBC, and sits at the heart of business questions from a editorial perspective, helping to inform service, content and performance questions.

Your role within this team is in three parts.  

  1. As the head of the team you’ll ensure quality of delivery, be responsible for career development, and bringing the parts together into a whole
  2. As a consultant to the heads of the divisional teams (who come from more traditional insight / research backgrounds) you’ll help them understand where the data team can deliver the most value
  3. As an individual you’ll act as Product / Project lead for strategic pan-BBC programmes of work such as the ongoing Return on Investment project analysing programme performance, working with stakeholders to successfully deliver the projects and helping them utilize the outputs in running their areas of the BBC.
Are You The Right Candidate?

The right person for this job will be happy working in a team spread across the business, be able to form good working relationships quickly, and be patient with others. You’ll have an interest in all areas of the BBC, including TV, Radio and Online.

You will have technical competence and be able to set up and manage projects over a range of areas. An interest in learning new skills and adapting approaches is an important part of this role.

You will manage discussions with stakeholders, work closely with colleagues in different areas of the BBC and recommend appropriate approaches to meet a variety of strategic and tactical business needs.

You will hold significant experience in some of the following and be able to demonstrate and understanding and interest in others:

  • Team Management: Manage a team of analysts who work on a wide range of different products. Have a broad understanding of various analytical techniques in order to suggest ways to move individuals' work forward
  • Adaptability: Be comfortable working on long-term strategic projects as well as overseeing quick turnaround ad hoc tactical work
  • Data Literacy: You will have experience in not just analysing data but also understanding where new data can be sourced to aid in the team’s delivery (including 3rd party sources)
  • Stakeholder Management: Understand and respond to the needs of editorial stakeholders at all levels, from individual content creators through to the BBC Sounds controller
  • Communication: Effective at communicating concepts to colleagues with varying degrees of technical knowledge
  • Delivery: Understanding of end-to-end data analytics/data tool building processes (e.g. data engineering, data analytics, business intelligence)
  • Coding: Be prepared/able to get hands-on with SQL/Python/R when required
  • Analytics: have a good understanding of a range of analytic approaches
  • Organisation: Awareness of project management methodologies/processes a benefit
  • Marketing: Exhibit general awareness of digital marketing channels e.g. search engines, social media, CRM activity (in the context of performance of content)
