Medical Science Liaison Manager – Neurology/Oncology

About the job

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Manager is responsible for:

- the leadership and management of the Neurology and Oncology MSL team, including align and executing the medical plan for engagement with the scientific community and oversee the effective and efficient functioning of individual MSLs and the MSL team- 50% of the time

- responsible for providing balanced, non-promotional high-level scientific and technical partnership to internal and external stakeholders for the benefit of patient care- 50% of the time Oncology MSL

 To achieve success, it is critical that the MSL Manager:

  • Is accountable for the results of the MSL team, driving excellence in a high performing team
  • Is an integral part of the medical team and the franchise providing regional and customer insight
  • Works effectively in a collaborative manner with sales, marketing, clinical development and the market access teams to achieve business goals
  • Deputises for medical lead where and when required

Main responsibilities:

  • Drive excellence in the MSL team; recruit and retain high calibre staff
  • Provide the environment for innovation and creativity
  • Develop and coach MSLs, including regular field visits with the MSLs to monitor capabilities and provide on the job coaching and support
  • Ensure individual and team performance goals are set and met through monitoring metrics, resources and budgets ensuring excellence in execution.
  • Leads and prioritises the objectives for the MSLs and inputs into the Medical plan and strategic planning process
  • Provide timely compliant accurate reports on both qualitative & quantitative measures in accordance with company policy
  • Liaises closely with other cross functional teams (including but not limited to Professional relations, market access, government affairs etc.) in the relevant divisional teams to align around the patient outcomes and business needs
  • Works closely with CSU at affiliate and above country level to deliver the clinical trial program aligned to the medical plan
  • Provides scientific and technical leadership to ensure professional and credible relationships with thought leaders and experts
  • Utilises strong business acumen and understands the Franchise strategy, acting as a key strategic business partner by providing actionable insights
  • Together with medical advisors, ensure that MSL team are aware of evolving evidence base in areas critical for the organisation.  Ensure this is communicated to the appropriate personnel and any scientific support is provided
  • Take personal responsibility for updating own knowledge on an ongoing basis and share learnings and best practice with the wider Medical Team as relevant
  • Through MSL team, provide technical advice and deliver training on disease area, therapy and clinical trials as requested by training department
  • Through MSL team work in collaboration with the training department to inform on the scientific content for the development of training materials
  • Provide technical support and input at company and regional meetings as requested
  • Liaise with the Medical Information and Pharmacovigilance, Clinical Support Unit teams to manage insights, queries, trials
About you
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent with a scientific qualification, PhD level is preferable or Previous substantial experience within medical affairs in an MSL role
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, experienced in the delivery of scientific presentations
  • Adaptable, independent and proactive working style
  • Knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry and of regulatory processes (Code of Practice and MHRA)
  • Working knowledge of the NHS, including the ability to understand clinical priorities and how processes work within this system
  • Awareness of clinical studies set up and maintenance-preferable
  • Able to build strong working relationships to achieve optimal outcomes for patients
  • Ability to collaborate and share information to contribute to the planning process and execute the agreed Medical plan in line with objectives
  • Line Management experience is preferable
  • Ability to lead, manage and develop a field-based team
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proven experience of building strong working cross-functional team relationships to achieve results
