My client is a very successful niche engineering services provider which is recognised as a market leader. This business is very well run and is in a stable position with strong foundations for growth.

Job Title: Managing Director

Location: Sutton, Surrey

Reports To: Group Board

Job Purpose:

To lead, direct and develop this specialist services business ensuring the highest standards of service are achieved by the team whilst delivering profitable growth.

Key Accountabilities:

Health & Safety: To lead the health and safety effort for the business by creating an environment and culture that puts safety first, ensuring continual adherence to Group H&S policies, procedures, and programmes.

People: To provide leadership and direction to people through a small management team operating across Operations, Sales, Finance and Administration. Ensure that the team are knowledgeable, competent, and well trained so that they can continually offer great service.

Financial: To drive the achievement of the financial targets for the Division (revenue, gross profit, overheads, margin achievement and ultimately operating profit). Responsible for the collation and presentation of monthly management reports that aid effective decision making.

Operational Performance: Create an environment in which the team understand the critical link between operational delivery and customer satisfaction and retention. Through the Operations team, ensure operational planning and the delivery of robust weekly schedules are in line with agreed targets. Given the more complex and demanding requirements of Key Accounts, ensure the team always maintain focus and contract adherence for these accounts.

Business Development: To drive significant revenue growth to agreed targets through a small, dedicated Sales team focused on securing both new testing and repair works. As the leader of the business, to maintain regular customer facing contact to keep abreast of opportunities and any issues.

Technical Competence: Through recruitment and ongoing training, coaching and development ensure an appropriate level of technical competence and understanding exists across the wider team. Drive the development and compliance to industry leading operating standards.

Job Context / Key Challenges:

Recently acquired the business is being integrated into the wider Group. The prior ownerr who formed and developed the business until 2023 will continue with the business 1 day a week from 2024 to help support the new Managing Director and the team and ensure customer relationships are handed over well.

The Managing Director must prioritise and balance the needs of the business, customers and team in a demanding and fast paced environment.

This is a high volume / low value environment where profitability requires a strong sales pipeline (renewals, repairs and new business) and efficient/effective operational delivery.

  • Strong communicator/influencer, with proven client facing experience
  • Numerate and analytical with experience of writing data driven business reports
