Position Summary & Objective

Position Summary:

This role is to participate in the research and development of microstructures for use as Optical Variable Devices (OVDs) to be used in security and brand protection applications. OpSec currently mass replicates holographic diffractive micro and nano structures that generate optically variable effects used for authentication and we are continuously developing new 3dimensional structures that can generate new and different optical effects. An opportunity has arisen to add a new member to the team and expand the capabilities. The role is to achieve this by a combination of modelling of optical microstructures and optimization using of grayscale electron beam, laser lithography and using more traditional holographic methods also.

The basic role will depend on developing a good understanding of basic physical principles involved so a background in a scientific discipline will be an advantage. However, our application involves the interface between the design activity and the and origination of complex, data intensive images and as such will include the understanding for taking complex multilevel graphic design files and converting them to dtat files that can be used to originate the OVD microstructures. This will require developing a detailed understanding of the computations and algorithms needed and the software and hardware required for implementation. As part of this the candidate will interact with internal and third-party software development houses. Background in computational physics would also be advantageous here. Good project planning, record keeping and reporting and presentation skills are essential.

On the practical side of the role, the work will involve the use of laser and electron beam 3d lithography techniques which the company already use extensively. The intention is, with the team, to widen the scope of structure types and materials we can use so different principles of light interaction can be achieved, for example plasmonic interactions, so visually distinctive and highly secure new features can be realized.

The role will require liaison with UK and US production sites and thus may require UK and international travel. The candidate will also be expected to work closely with other development teams that concentrate on materials, product development, but also have extensive contact with sales and marketing teams and

Qualifications Skills and Experience Required :

• Background in scientific discipline to at least degree level, physics and/or computational physics and advantage
• Industry and Laboratory experience useful, in areas such as physics, photonics, optics, laser systems, electron beam systems or holography.
• Good computational skills, including a programming language and /or use of mathematical modelling software. Good mathematical knowledge.
• Understanding of techniques to originate and manipulate micro and nano structures.
• An understanding and ideally practical experience of analytic techniques to study microstructures, such as SEM, AFM optical microscopy
