Salary:  £31,000 - £36,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Job Introduction

We are looking for a Playout Programme Planner/Senior Scheduling Co-Ordinator to join the team.  This is an exciting opportunity to join the BBC Planning and Scheduling team in this unique hybrid role, working on the BBC Three Linear Channel.

Main Responsibilities

Reporting to a Head of Planning and Scheduling and working closely with the Schedule Manager and the iPlayer Planner, this role is responsible for ensuring that all planning aspects of the BBC Three linear schedule have been editorially and operationally approved.  They are also responsible for data integrity in the scheduling and planning systems, ensuring communication and distribution of information across the wider team.

Within the role you will be responsible for ensuring for both the preparation of the schedules for press and the smooth running of the playout planning process for the channel. You will be responsible for ensuring all data required is accurately managed and implemented within the broadcasting systems, and shared with appropriate colleagues at the right time. The focus of the role is BBC Three Linear but the successful candidate may be required to rotate across platforms/channels according to business need and to cover for other equivalent colleagues during leave/sickness.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a flexible and collaborative approach and will be able to :

  • Create and maintain all titles in the scheduling system and ensure that all details are correct and current (e.g. delivery, budget, supplier, quota management, funding, hours, funding type, airing order, titles).
  • To manage the preparation of the schedules for press and handover to playout.  
  • Work in partnership across outputs, online, media planning and genre teams to ensure pan TV consistency in processes, reporting and systems – notably monitoring successful delivering and ensuring consistency and accuracy with live or topical delivering content from areas such as news or sport.
  • To liaise with the Head of Planning and Scheduling (or equivalent) about issues affecting the overall service provided by playout planning. 

  • To liaise with other business areas to resolve issues and ensure playout planning delivers and accurate and transmission ready schedule.
  • Help maintain ‘off schedule’ plans, providing assistance to production teams delivering content.
  • To be the authority regarding certain detailed scheduling attributes (unique identifiers, standby programmes and transmission titles) in the context of the schedule handover and post-handover processes, running issue checks to identity and resolve inconsistencies.
  • Collaborating closely with Media Planning on the length and composition of junctions to ensure the schedule runs to time
  • Ensure that ‘as run’ (actually transmitted) information is reconciled so that the historic schedule is always accurate and complete.
  • Ensure programme delivery dates are in line with output and service needs and are realistic.
  • Assist Finance and Planning by researching and confirming costs of programme acquisitions and repeats and assist with month end balancing (reports and balancing notes) as required.
  • To both manage and editorially input into standby content lists and content suitable for access services.
  • To make informed decisions regarding timing and logistical problems in the schedule in close liaison with the Head of Planning and Scheduling. 

  • Ensure planned programme schedule is complete and correct at point of publication deadlines and subsequently ready for handover to playout operations. 

  • Ensure that the Playout Editor is fully briefed regarding all aspects of the programme schedule at handover.
Are you the right candidate?

The ideal candidate for this role will have a flexible and collaborative approach and will have:

  • An understanding of the structure of transmission schedules, the significance of programme detail, junction points, opt-out points and the requirements of associated systems.
  • An eye for detail, able to manage large volumes of information and data, demonstrating an understanding of the importance of data quality and accuracy.
  • Highly organised approach to own workload. Maintains awareness of key dates/deadlines such as programme delivery and alerts others to key issues on own initiative.
  • A flexible and collaborative approach demonstrating an ability to access and act on changing priorities.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving to improve processes and to achieve best practice.
  • Good working knowledge of the commissioning, planning and scheduling processes.
  • Good IT Skills, capable of working with spread sheets and databases.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to establish and sustain credibility with senior management and colleagues across all areas of the BBC.
