Full Job Description

Our role in protecting the nation’s security is unique, which is why being a CNC Police Officer is about so much more than traditional policing. You’ll join a highly trained, well-disciplined, and professional team working from our Operational Units to provide 24/7 armed response: patrolling and protecting nuclear sites, facilities and materials, as well as patrolling in the local communities and working with local Home Office Police Forces.

Upon joining the CNC you’ll be enrolled onto the Level Four Non Home Office Police Officer apprenticeship. This is a two year apprenticeship; the first 19 weeks will be a residential Initial Foundation Programme (IFP) which will include our world-class comprehensive Authorised Firearms training; we give our officers everything they need to become some of the most highly trained firearms professionals in the country, so there’s no need for you to have any prior policing experience when joining us.

At the end of the IFP you will be posted to your nominated location and, in the remaining 20 months as an operational Authorised Firearms Officer, you’ll complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your policing ability. Towards the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll take an End Point Assessment, upon successful completion of this you’ll be confirmed in rank as a Police Constable.

Following a successful recruitment campaign, we are currently unable to offer opportunities to join at our Hinkley Point site, however, if you would consider temporarily relocating to one of the most picturesque areas in the country, this could be the opportunity for you!

After successful completion of your Initial Foundation Course, you would immediately transfer to Sellafield for up to 24 months. We can provide financial support to move yourself and your partner/family with you – more details around this can be shared as you get further into our process.

At the end of your transfer period, you will move back to Hinkley Point, taking with you a wealth of additional knowledge and experience gained from working at Sellafield, the largest operational site within the CNC. Here, you will work as within a large team, dedicated to maintaining the security of one of the largest and most complex industrial sites in Europe.

Sellafield is a unique place to work where there are opportunities to gain expertise within our specialist teams, which are intrinsic to the protection of a CAT 1 nuclear site. Officers at Sellafield will enhance their AFO skills by training at the CNCs innovative tactical training facility, Griffin Park, the biggest and best of its kind in Europe. Having a range of different roles at Sellafield enables you to develop and progress your career, making Sellafield a rewarding place to work.

Sellafield is nestled next to the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, one of the most beautiful and iconic places in the world. The local and surrounding areas boast some of the most outstanding mountains, fells and lakes you could wish to visit, along with a huge range of pubs, restaurants and fantastic walks and leisure activities.

Recent surveys have found that Cumbria is also one of the safest places to live, with low crime levels throughout the county. It also boasts one of the lowest cost of living rates too, with properties priced well below the national average in most locations.

So how about a new career with CNC and the opportunity to temporarily relocate to experience the quality of life that Cumbria can offer you and your family?

The above is in addition to the generous benefits package offered to all CNC officers, including:

  • 22 days (176 hours) per year annual leave, plus bank holidays
  • Generous pension scheme (20.7% employer contribution)
  • Free parking at all sites
  • Free gym at some sites
  • Enhanced family friendly and wellbeing policies
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Officers and staff can also join the national Blue Light Card scheme which offers discounts on a variety of products and services to those working in the emergency services, NHS, and Armed Forces

After your 2-year probationary period, you’ll be eligible to apply for a role in one of our specialist areas to enhance your policing skills further, such as Dog Handler, Special Branch, Firearms Instructor or Strategic Escort Group Officer.

As police officers the public expect us to display the highest standards, values and professional qualities at all times. The CNC values and Code of Ethics applies to all police officers and sets out the principles standards of behaviour we expect to see, and you are responsible for displaying and delivering to the highest standards.
