Job Duties

Following specific protocol, provides direct patient care in clinics and patient homes.
Characteristic duties: administers oral, IM, subcutaneous medications and
immunizations, if a medications course has been completed and performed under
supervision of a RN or Physician. Interviews patients for medical histories, counsels
patients, teaches, instructs, obtains lab specimens and performs routine laboratory
work, takes vital signs, refers abnormal findings to physician, prepares patients for
physical examinations and assists physician during examination. Licensure as Practical
Nurse required by state code

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure as Practical Nurse required by state code.
• Knowledge of techniques and practices of the nursing profession, of public
health practices, of quality assurance concepts, of teaching principles, of
principles of decision making and problem solving techniques, of accurate
record keeping and quality control, of socio-economic conditions relating to
personal needs of clients
• Skills in performing technical procedures, in communication orally and
written, in interacting with clients and the general public
• Ability to document clearly and accurately utilizing the health department’s
accepted form of documentation, to establish and maintain working
relationships with individuals and families to function as a team member

Additional Considerations

• Current CPR certification
• Prior experience in a public health setting preferred

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence
of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of
tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of
tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10
years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.
