Job title: Principal Embedded Software Engineer

Salary: Up to £80,000 DOE

Location: Eastleigh / Hybrid working

Your new role

Here at Hitachi Rail, we are looking to recruit a highly experienced, Principal Embedded Software Engineer to join the team. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager – Product Development, as the Principal Embedded Software Engineer it will be expected that there is a high level of interaction with the Embedded Software & Electronics Team as well as Analytical and Design Services.

This role is to work with the Embedded Software & Electronics Team, in conjunction with Analytical and Design Services as required, to design software systems for next generation products as part of Hitachi Rail’s vehicle and track Condition Monitoring System. The Principal Embedded Software Engineer will be responsible for the design and development of embedded software for Wireless Sensor Nodes as well as high level language software for containerised Data Concentrator (Gateway) applications.

The role will be based at the Hitachi Rail office in Eastleigh moving to a hybrid office/home working environment upon completion of probation. Office attendance is required for design and planning meetings and configuration of physical hardware. Occasional work-related travel both nationally and internationally is also a requirement of the role.

About you…

Applicants should be able to demonstrate all of the essential requirements listed below:

Essential skills & experience

  • In-depth experience of software design and development.
  • Analytical problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent proficiency in C and Python.
  • Low power systems.
  • Good knowledge of electronics.
  • STM32 and or Silicon Labs toolchains.
  • Design for test – Test Driven Development (TDD).
  • Continuous Integration e.g. TeamCity, Jenkins etc.

Role responsibilities include…

  • To take a lead role in the design and development of software for Hitachi Rail’s vehicle and track Condition Monitoring Systems.
  • To produce power-efficient, high-reliability designs consistent with the target market for the company’s products.
  • Provide technical guidance to the Embedded Software & Electronics Teams as required.
  • Investigate relevant new technologies that may be applied to software development of Hitachi Rail’s vehicle and track Condition Monitoring System.
  • Continous improvement of automated module test.
  • Continuous improvement of software development processes, configuration management and quality assurance.
  • Project responsibilities – product specifications, technical project plans, task delegation and monitoring.
  • To support other departments e.g., Firmware/Software/Test with product development and qualification.
  • Support and follow company procedures and processes.
  • Take advantage of staff development opportunities and periodic performance reviews in accordance with terms and conditions specified by the company.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties at the request of the line manager.
  • Other duties and responsibilities express and implied which arise from the nature and character of the post within the department (or section) mentioned above or in a comparable post in any of the Organisation’s other sections or departments.
