Principal/Senior Environmental Consultant – Decarbonisation

Due to the ongoing success of this initiative, we are currently looking for a highly skilled and motivated Environmental Consultant to join our dedicated team in evaluating the sustainability and resilience of energy generation projects and opportunities. 

Position Overview:  We are investing heavily in growing our Sustainability, Resilience & ESG practice to help our clients navigate a constantly evolving landscape of risks and opportunities. 

You will be expected to bring fresh ideas based on your previous experience, whilst winning and delivering work for our clients. In return we will support and encourage you to develop your capability and experience across many sectors, giving you the freedom to explore and pioneer your interests across a broad project and client base.

Your primary role is to work with the UK Decarbonisation Leader and peers in other regions as well as our wider team to position for, win and deliver projects relating to carbon quantification, low carbon design, technology advice, and operationalising net zero roadmaps. You will help drive our ambition to grow and become a technical authority in decarbonisation by expanding GHD’s profile and brand in the market. 

The role will have two aspects:

  • Working with the Team to win and deliver projects/workstreams in decarbonisation, including: carbon accounting (including Scope 3 GHG emissions), developing solutions to operationalise client’s decarbonisation plans/ net zero pathways; provide technical advice on low carbon technologies and low carbon alternatives in infrastructure, building or industrial design. 
  • Supporting the strategic development and continued growth of our capabilities in decarbonisation, with a focus on business delivery, forging and strengthening client relationships. You will play an integral role in the growth of the Team, help develop relationship with new clients, winning work, growing backlog, delivering high-quality outcomes for our clients and building the technical capability or our team.

You will be joining a multi-disciplinary company and team with a great culture and strong, supportive relationships. The role can be based in our London, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Chester, York or Newcastle offices, working closely with our team in London, Qatar and the UAE.

Core responsibilities 

As a member of our Sustainability and Resilience Team focused on enabling the growth and development of carbon consulting services, this position offers an excellent variety of work and will see you involved in:

  • Technical leadership and delivery of projects to provide specialist advice and strategic guidance to clients on carbon and sustainability issues including decarbonisation pathways, which may include low carbon technologies, energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste management, and/or sustainable procurement across different sectors including, but not limited to, manufacturing, infrastructure and built environment.
  • Leading, supporting and influencing the identification and pursuit of decarbonisation related opportunities that will strengthen team capability and enable the growth of both pipeline and backlog whilst supporting clients achieve their carbon and climate commitments.
  • Develop and deliver carbon quantification methodologies, models/ projects covering whole life cycle or part thereof and advise clients on the most appropriate solution to meet client needs and stakeholder expectations.
  • Lead the collection, analysis and interpretation of datasets for Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions.
  • Support our engineering teams in delivering low carbon designs.
  • Leveraging your industry knowledge and experience to develop and maintain lasting client relationships built on trust and delivery.
  • Function as a Project Manager or Project Director being accountable for tasks and deliver high quality outputs within budget.
  • Mentoring and training members of the team.
  • Maintaining and share knowledge of energy/carbon policy developments, carbon accounting, carbon market, methodology changes, energy markets and wider energy/sustainability issues.

Skills, experience and qualifications 

  • Demonstrated consulting experience in at least one of the following:
    • BREEAM Assessor/ equivalent, and knowledge about low carbon materials and low carbon construction techniques.
    • Operationalising Net Zero Strategies on projects/ programmes.
    • Experience developing Carbon Reduction Plans/strategies or similar, based on low carbon technologies.
    • Experience/ understanding industry process/ hydrogen production/ desalination.
    • Experience/understanding on energy networks, energy security.
  • Knowledge of UK and EU decarbonisation/Net zero frameworks and policy.
  • Experience building and maintaining client relationships and industry networks, providing technical recommendations for bids and writing project proposals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues concisely and effectively.
  • Strong relationship building and influencing skills.
  • Collaborative working in multidisciplinary environments, a strong team player who builds rapport with both internal & external stakeholders.
  • 10+ years consulting experience in sustainability and carbon.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in engineering, environmental science, sustainability or related field of study.
