Job Duties
The Department of Juvenile
Justice is committed to excellence in public safety by providing
effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening
both families and communities within the Commonwealth. To assist with
carrying out the organizational objective, DJJ is pursuing a qualified
professional Registered Nurse(s) to provide quality nursing care
interventions designed to have a lifetime impact on our
residents.
The Registered Nurse will:
- Assess and treat acute and chronic illness through the use of nursing assessment, nursing protocols and standing orders, respond to medical emergencies, guide the LPN in their nursing practice, and maintain a standard of nursing practice consistent with state and federal laws, Va. Board of Nursing laws, regulation, and guidance documents and DJJ policies and procedures based on the community standard.
Flexible Shifts Available: Day & Night (10, 12, & 14
hour shifts)
The selected applicant for this
position is subject to a background investigation and pre-employment
drug screen.
This is an hourly/wage position and is limited
to 1500 hours to average 29 hours per week in a 12-month period. This
position does not include the state benefit package.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduate of an
accredited school of nursing. RN licensure in good standing in
Virginia or compact state. Working knowledge of the principles of
professional nursing practice. Must have a basic knowledge of normal
adolescent growth and development and typical health issues of the
adolescent. Utilizes nursing assessment, history of present illness,
review of symptoms and nursing protocols to make a nursing diagnosis.
Utilizes nursing diagnosis to determine
level of care needed,
implements standing orders based on the level of care required and
follows through with emergency procedure as indicated by nursing
diagnosis and standing orders. Makes referrals to the nursing
supervisor, NP/MD or ER as appropriate using critical thinking and
standards of practice. Demonstrates the ability to work in
collaboration with a
multi-disciplinary team.
Additional Considerations
Experience as an RN in clinical practice in corrections, ambulatory care, pediatrics or adolescents or prior LPN experience in DJJ. Basic knowledge of electronic record keeping. Experience with medication administrations and the 5 rights of medication administration. Healthcare Provider (Professional Rescuer) CPR certification current with two person, bag valve mask AED. Knowledge and experience with ACA or NCCHC accreditation.
