Position Details

College of Medical and Dental Sciences

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full time starting salary is normally in the range £31,396 to £33,966 with potential progression once in post to £38,205

Grade: 6 

Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to February 2025 

Closing date: 24th April 2024 

This role is also open as an internal secondment opportunity which would need to be agreed by your current line manager.

Please note: We are advertising both Research Associate (4507) and Research Fellow (4506) however there is only 1 post available 

Background

To assist in research (by carrying out data collection or analyses) to create knowledge through providing research support for projects and research groups.

The post holder will work within the Clincal Immunology Service (CIS) which sits within the college of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. The CIS is a comprehensive UKAS accredited laboratory which serves over 200 Trusts around the UK. In addition, the CIS has a large research portfolio providing central trials analysis for a number of national studies and supporting other research trials and studies. The post holder will assist with the laboratory delivery of existing and planned clinical trials and studies. 

The post holder will support Prof Alex Richter (CIS Clinical Director, Consultant Immunologist) Dr Adrian Shields (Consultant Immunogist, Associate Professor) and Dr Angus Best (Research Laboratory Manager) by assisting with the day to day delivery of research portfolio activites.

Role Summary

  • Work within specified research grants and/or projects
  • Contribute to publications
  • Work within specified research grant and project objectives to assist with the delivery of clincal trials, studies and commissioned pieces of research work
  • Operate within agreed Standard Operting Procedures (SOPs) 
  • Assist with the analysis and interpretation of clinical trial findings and results
  • Assist with the research sample archiving database, including sample requests 
  • Assist with Quality assurance of samples
  • Contribute to discussions at internal and external project meetings 

Main Duties

  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews
  • Analyse research data as directed
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
  • Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture

Person Specification

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant subject area 
  • Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques
  • Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
