Senior Civil Structural Engineer
We have an exciting new
opportunity for a Senior Civil Structural Engineer based in either
Plymouth, Devonport or Bristol. The requirement is to visit either
site once every six weeks.
About the Role:
In
order to deliver the MoD’s submarine and warship programmes, a
significant programme of infrastructure investment is required on the
Devonport site. The ‘Major Infrastructure Projects’ (MIP) Business
Unit has been established to support this.
One of the key
scope elements within MIP is establishing a defuel capability for out
of service submarines, which is delivered under the programme banner
of Defuel23. This work comprises of a number of interrelated projects
to develop various multi-disciplinary infrastructure systems, with an
overall value in excess of £100m.
The Dock Readiness project
is delivering the infrastructure upgrades for the existing dry dock
that will be used for the submarine defuels. The dry dock is within a
nuclear licensed site.
Multiple work packages form the Dock
Readiness project. This role is part of that Engineering Team that is
delivering the designs for each of those work packages.
Main
purpose of role:
The primary purpose of the role is to
ultimately assist and support the Design Manager in the delivery of
project scope. This will include the likes of the following
To undertake the delivery of civil / structural engineering work
packages to the required scope, quality, schedule and cost.
Responsible for managing the technical aspects of the engineering
packages from identification of the need, through to handover.
Manage one or more technical design packages agreeing project
related objectives, managing designer performance and making
appropriate technical management responses. Provide Subject Matter
Expert advice as per discipline.
Ensure that the design
documentation covers the scope of operations required by the Project
Manager and is produced to agreed standards, schedule and budget.
Plan for effective project implementation, identifying key
factors and leading the project’s technical planning process.
Ensure that the processes and activities being managed are
appropriately documented with appropriate records maintained and
configuration and quality controls applied.
Ensure that
staff and contractors are familiar with the hazards and risks
associated with the work undertaken by the delegated engineering team
through effective management and communication of the Risk Assessment.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences
The candidate must demonstrate
Design and
substantiation of heavy civil engineering and building structures to
relevant seismic codes for satisfying Nuclear Safety Functions
particular experience in dock structures preferred
Knowledge
of architectural design of industrial buildings
Knowledge of
building services design and installation
Knowledge of
construction techniques employed for Nuclear Safety related structures
and buildings.
Be able to demonstrate relevant knowledge and
skills required in the technical management of complex design
development throughout the design lifecycle
A track record
in Structural / Civil design in a comparable environment.
Experience working in a multi-disciple environment with multiple
interfaces.
Sound understanding of engineering design and
safety practice as relevant to discipline, post and project
requirements
Sound understanding of Company and departmental
procedures relating to Design, Health & Safety and Quality
requirements, and ability to manage projects in accordance with these
procedures.
Experience of the design support to
construction, operation, refit/repair of conventional and nuclear
submarines and/or facilities
A professional level of
competence in the generation of documentation, calculation and
drawings (CAD by others).
Working knowledge of relevant
engineering computer applications
The ability to follow an
engineering process and maintain accurate records and document/drawing
revision control.
A proven track record in completing work
packages in a highly regulated environment would be desirable.
Qualifications:
The candidate will have a degree or
equivalent in a Civil or Structural engineering related discipline.
Preferably Chartered Engineer status and member of relevant
institute or significant demonstrable engineering experience and
capable of registration with the Engineering Council at CEng level.
