We are seeking a senior in-house lawyer to join our UK Legal team as a Senior Legal Advisor. To succeed in this role, you must have a legal qualification or relevant degree and experience as an in-house contract reviewer/legal advisor or contract manager in the construction industry is essential. This position can be based in any of our offices in the UK but you will also have the opportunity to split your time working flexibly from home and in the office. Ramboll operate a Hybrid working policy, allowing you to split your time between the office and working from home.

About the role

As our new Legal Advisor, you will be part of a dynamic team based in various locations across England with a view to your base being in your appropriate local office in Southampton or London. You will deal mainly with non-contentious matters including complex contractual arrangements. Your role will focus on identification and management of legal risk, contract negotiation and drafting coupled with the provision of commercial and pragmatic legal advice. You will also provide contractual support on matters which may arise during the lifecycle of the project. In addition, an important part of the role is promoting legal awareness across Ramboll through delivering training and you will be involved in providing support to the Legal Team’s training offering.

This role is key in ensuring that the Legal team’s support to the business is efficient, accurate and proactive so that contract negotiations can progress as swiftly as possible.

Your key tasks and responsibilities will be:

  • Reviewing primarily construction professional services contracts (both bespoke and industry standard such as NEC and JCT) as well as other project legal documents, including responding to requests for contract amendments to Ramboll standard agreements, with a view to achieving swift and appropriate conclusion of contract negotiations
  • Providing tailored advice to the Executive Board on risks in contracts and preparing necessary supporting documentation
  • Advising project directors and project managers on risks related to contractual issues arising within projects both prior to execution of the relevant agreement and during the project lifecycle
  • Liaising with other support functions such as the Finance and Commercial Teams in relation to contract support and advice
  • Advising on and assisting with internal governance and the preparation of the required approvals
  • Leading or assisting in contract negotiations with external clients or their representatives
  • Responding to internal legal queries
  • Advising on appropriate contract forms and specific legal aspects (research if necessary) in a practical and commercially focussed way
  • Preparing guidelines and forms for internal circulation
  • Occasionally producing and delivering legal training

  • Degree or equivalent qualifications in Law
  • 5 years' experience of providing in-house legal support in a consultancy or engineering company
  • A good understanding of contract and construction law
  • Experience in the construction industry and knowledge of the construction process
  • Possessing commercial acumen and the ability to take a risk-balanced approach
  • Experience in complex construction/consultancy contract drafting/negotiation essential
  • Excellent communicator with effective interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail are essential
  • The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • The ability to meet deadlines and prioritise workload effectively
