About Our Practice:

Our talented and friendly team at Penrose Vets proudly support the local community and loyal client base. Our main surgery is modern, purpose-built, and located on the northern edge of the historic city of Colchester.

We have a central hub arrangement from which clean theatre, prep area, dental suite and x-ray room radiate. We are equipped with new flexible endoscopes, digital tonometry, class 4 laser, echocardiography, as well as the usual kit.

We are the host practice for the ‘Vets Now’ service for the area, meaning our in-patients remain cared for on-site overnight and at weekends by a dedicated team.

We greatly value our team ethos, and there is always help and advice available with any challenging cases or situations from our clinicians who have experience and skill sets covering most areas, including certificate holders. We have a 6 Vet team, supported by outstanding teams of RVNs (we are a training practice), and support team. We have a highly experienced orthopaedic surgeon, and clinicians studying for certification on cardiology and soft tissue surgery.

About the Role:

The purpose of the Senior Veterinary Surgeon Role will be to:

  • Safeguard the welfare of animals under the care of Penrose Veterinary Group.
  • Provide appropriate support and guidance to colleagues.
  • Contribute to the management, organisation and financial performance of the practice by working with the Clinical Director.
  • Uphold the reputation of Penrose Veterinary Group within the local and wider communities.

This role reports to the Clinical Director.

In addition to the ongoing veterinary surgeon duties, as outlined in the veterinary surgeon’s contract, the Senior Veterinary Surgeon will be expected to:

  • Contribute to discussions and meetings on the management of the practice as required by the Clinical Director.
  • Assist the Clinical Director in administrative and organisational duties including, but not limited to: conducting clinical audit, development and improvement of practice protocols, complaint handling.
  • Deputise for the Clinical Director when the Clinical Director is absent.
  • Communicate to the Clinical Director any concerns about the performance of the practice or the clinical team, contribute your ideas for how the practice can be improved and performance enhanced.
  • Report to line manager any concerns of ability or misconduct from other members of staff.
  • Follow practice and group clinical guidelines where appropriate and ensure these are followed by other members of the team.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to less experienced vets, support less experienced vets to develop in their role.
  • Continually supervise, train and educate the Veterinary Nurses.
  • Treat all colleagues and clients with courtesy and respect.
  • Participate in practice activities and initiatives as required.
  • Follow group policies on charging for treatments, ensure that all work is charged appropriately and not discounted without appropriate approval.
  • Price appropriately all clinical cases and inform the client of potential cost prior to treatment commencing.
  • Ensure that all vets charge appropriately for their services.
  • Understand your role in contributing to the financial performance of the practice.
  • Ensure that clients are offered full and appropriate treatment options for their pets.
  • Ensure that all treatment given is in line with informed consent and in accordance with UK legislation and RCVS guide to professional conduct.
  • Be familiar with the ethics of the practice outlined in the RCVS Guide to professional conduct (Part 1 section B).
  • Present a professional approach and smart appearance at all times.
  • Be available 24 hours (unless alternative out of hours’ cover is available) for the relief of pain and suffering of animals.
  • Assume responsibility for surgical and medical cases at all times.
  • Record all patient information, treatment, diagnostic reports and charges into the Veterinary system.
  • Be fully responsible for the safety of the clients and staff within the practice when animals are being treated or handled.
  • Understand and comply with your legal obligations in relation to prescription, safe keeping and supply of Veterinary medicinal products.
  • Ensure the security of the premises when leaving.
