Full Job Description

Metro brings news, sport, analysis, features, opinion, and everything in between to a fast-growing global audience and we’re now looking for a talented Social Video Journalist to join our London team.

You’ll be joining a high-performing social video team during an exciting period of development as Metro.co.uk’s short-form vertical video and long-form offering expands. You’ll be responsible for filming, producing, and delivering daily ‘what’s on’ and ‘review’ type video content for TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, with a focus on London's food and drink scene. As such, this role requires knowledge of every major social platform. Ideal candidates will be deeply familiar with London restaurants, bars, pop-ups, events (and more), while also having the ability to quickly identify and act upon viral trends.

Your fingers must be on the pulse of online conversation. You should be able to spot a new story or rising trend and act quickly to generate engaging video content around this. The ability to create, present and review critically is a must.

Role Responsibilities

  • Ability to identify and turnaround engaging social-first videos at pace
  • Monitor emerging trends and relay ideas confidently to the team
  • Research and produce scripts for social videos with an understanding of the key narrative of a story
  • Script, present, edit, and deliver daily and weekly short-form video content across social channels
  • Know how to target and engage the youth of London through compelling social videos (short-form and long-form)
  • Willingness to appear on-screen
  • Source and re-edit the best and most engaging content, making sure clips are sourced in a legal manner and credited appropriately
  • Film high-quality, original content remotely and in-person, including with contributors and talent
  • Create headlines, social copy, and metadata for the posting of videos across all platforms
  • Use data and analytics to inform decisions on pitches and future content
  • Have an idea of all the major social platforms and how video content should be repackaged to suit each one
  • Understand legal covenants such as the UK Editors’ Code of Practice, media law, copyright law, and editorial guidelines in the UK and globally
  • Help to build a strong Metro.co.uk voice across our video output
  • Must be able to review things critically

Key Skills and Experience

  • Experience working within a news/media/food environment at a local or national level or strong student media experience
  • Ability to write and present a compelling script, as well as recording videos to match
  • An understanding of the vertical video environment
  • Experience in scripting, producing, editing and delivering video content
  • An understanding of how analytics impacts content decisions
  • Ability to edit using Adobe Premiere Pro and other editing suites
  • Adobe After Effects experience preferred but not essential
  • Understanding of the UK Editors’ Code of Practice, media and copyright law
  • Willingness to work in a dynamic, fast-paced 24/7 news environment with the flexibility to work unsociable hours as and when required

The above list is not exhaustive and constantly evolving, based on the needs of the business.

Out-of-hours availability and a high level of adaptability are essential.

Your shift rotation will require you to work at least one weekend day per week.

Please apply by sending an up-to-date CV, a note about yourself and why you’d be perfect for the team, and, if available, a showreel.

Any applications received without a CV will not be considered.
