The Role:

This role is about creating the vital link between the company sustainability vision and strategy, and the experiences we deliver through our development pipeline, ensuring our products and delivery reflect our aspirations in all aspects of the programme.

You will act as the subject expert in the field of sustainable development in the built environment having a strong knowledge and good understanding on energy efficiency, net zero carbon, upfront and whole life carbon, health and wellbeing, sustainable procurement and biodiversity both in internal and external forums.

You will need to leverage the company’s leadership position in influencing policy and industry working groups whilst elevating the company profile and developing strategic partnerships with experts in the field.

The Team:

You will be joining the Sustainability Team who are 24 strong, looking after everything from social value, environmental management, net zero carbon and the energy bureau. We are a fun and dynamic team working with all areas of the business to drive our sustainability strategy. As part of this role, you will also work closely with our development teams across both our Workplace and Lifestyle business units, with a big scope for impact.

What you will be responsible for:

  • Guide and support development teams to ensure excellence in design and delivery of the company Sustainable Development Toolkit and Materials Guidance Brief
  • Together with the Landsec Development team, select, influence and manage sustainability consultants and delivery partners to ensure sustainability targets are optimised and delivered. Be a key member of the design team ensuring that wider disciplines understand and own the sustainability vision of a project
  • Engage with designers, consultants and contractors to ensure understanding of our sustainability framework and sustainability metrics relevant to our development and refurbishment schemes.
  • Lead the delivery of net zero carbon buildings in accordance with UKGBC guidance and of Landsec’s upfront embodied carbon targets which feed into our near term science-based target
  • Lead on circular economy strategies for the project but support the implementation of a Landsec portfolio circular economy strategy
  • Work with other areas of the business to ensure cross pollination of initiatives and embedding sustainability and health and wellbeing best practice throughout
  • When required, update Landsec documentation to ensure relevance and effective implementation of the sustainability programme in developments, including consultant scopes, project briefs and implementation plans
  • Collate and prepare evidence to support our annual assurance process and external communications, ensuring that financial, carbon and other performance metrics claims can be backed up with robust and complete data.
  • Active engagement with stakeholders at all levels of seniority - regular interaction with Heads of departments in a supporting and consulting function as well as Director and Managerial roles
  • Together with the Landsec Development team, own the relationship with sustainability consultants and provide oversight and challenge to design outputs to drive better results, ensuring alignment with Landsec’s commitments and targets.
  • Ensure that the Landsec Sustainable Development Toolkit and Material Guidance Brief is implemented across projects.
  • Collect and critically analyse sustainability data relevant for our development schemes, identifying anomalies and best practice and reporting information that could inform decision making.

Your skills, experience and qualifications:

Essential criteria

  • Carbon literacy – modelling experience is not required but good understanding of Scope 3 carbon and carbon accounting
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Strategic thinker with excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Numerate with capacity to quantify the impact of decisions from a cost and value perspective
