Overview

 

Do you share our passion for cultural heritage and have the skills to help us realise our ambitions?

 

With a number of Trustees retiring, we are seeking up to four Trustees to join the Board of National Museums Scotland who have experience, knowledge and expertise in finance , estates , science or development .

 

National Museums Scotland is one of the leading museum groups in Europe and it looks after collections of national and international importance covering: natural sciences; decorative arts, craft, design and fashion from across the world; science and technology; and Scottish history and archaeology. The public can explore these through displays and exhibitions, online, national and international engagement programmes, and programmes and resources for schools. National Museums Scotland also provides loans, partnerships, research and training, in Scotland and internationally.

 

Millions of local and international visitors enjoy National Museum Scotland’s four museums each year: the National Museum of Scotland; the National War Museum; the National Museum of Flight; and the National Museum of Rural Life. The National Museums Collection Centre in Edinburgh houses conservation and research facilities as well as collections not currently on display.

Skills/Experience Required

There are four separate posts for this recruitment round and the successful applicants must be able to demonstrate experience, knowledge and expertise of working in one of the posts below:

  • Post one: Finance (commencing 01 October 2024)
  • Post two: Estates (commencing 01 October 2024)
  • Post three: Science (commencing 01 April 2025)
  • Post four: Development (commencing 01 April 2025).

  The successful applicants will also need to demonstrate all of the following general skills, personal qualities and attributes:

  • Strong commitment to museums and galleries and their role in society, and representing the sector.
  • Seeing the ‘bigger picture’.
  • Challenging the views of others in a constructive and supportive way.
  • Communicating effectively.

The successful applicants will also have the capacity and commitment to grow into the Trustee role and develop their skills, whether or not they have prior experience of being on a board. 

 

Time Commitment and Remuneration

 

The average time commitment is approximately 9-12 days per annum. Appointments to the Board of Trustees of the National Museums Scotland are not remunerated.
