About the team/division                       

Hiscox has been writing Marine & Energy Liability insurance as part of the wider Marine & Energy Division in London Market for many years and is viewed as one of the leading Markets in the class. The Marine & Energy Liability portfolio is written alongside Marine Hull & War, Marine Cargo, Upstream Energy and Power and Renewables within the Marine & Energy Division.  The budget for Marine & Energy Liability for 2023 will be in the region of $110m gross.

To achieve this goal we are pushing the boundaries in terms of distribution, innovation and a diverse range of products within our portfolio. The book is split into a variety of sub-classes, with a broad appetite both in terms of activity and geography.  The book is predominantly US focused but we have the ability and remit to write business all over the World.  The key to our success is our deep technical understanding of the products we sell and the activities our clients perform, enabling us to identify the best risks and differentiate ourselves from our competitors. This is your opportunity to contribute to servicing a large portfolio and help influence and shape our Marine & Energy Liability offering in Lloyd’s.

The Role

We are looking for an Underwriter to join our current underwriting team of 3. This role will report directly into the Marine & Energy Liability Line Underwriter.  The key to success in this role will be a detailed underwriting approach, strong relationship management and unparalleled sales skills, as well as strong organisational skills and the ability to think ahead and use initiative.  You will need to thrive in a business development role and be able to demonstrate a skill for working with senior brokers/clients. You will need to take ownership of relationships and be confident these lead to profitable business.

What you’ll be doing in the role:

• Responsible for Underwriting all elements of our Marine & Energy Liability portfolio
• Lead and develop close relationships with our partner brokers
• Contribute to the analysis of our appetite in all areas
• Contribute to underwriting & sales initiatives to grow the portfolio
• Position yourself and Hiscox as the go-to market for Marine & Energy Liability in Lloyd’s

Person Specification:   

• A proven track record and strong reputation of underwriting in the Lloyd’s market
• Decisive in nature, displaying good judgement in decisions and taking accountability
• A great communicator who can work with people at all levels, and are just as comfortable with clients and leaders in the industry as they are with their own team.
• Existing Broker and client relationships
• Degree educated or equivalent

• Experience across both Marine and Energy Liability lines
