Full Job Description

Role: Underwriting Performance Manager

Location: London

Position type: Full time, permanent

The role holder is a senior member of the Underwriting Performance function and will work under the direction of the Head of Underwriting Performance. The objectives of the role will be to continue to grow the business profitably, and to manage underwriting performance at a portfolio and class level.

In addition this role will play a key part in managing MS Amlin’s external underwriting performance stakeholder relationships with a particular focus on the Lloyd's relationship.

About The Job

What you’ll spend your time doing:

  • Play a key role assessing underwriting performance across MS Amlin, identifying areas of concern and working with the Head of Underwriting Performance and underwriting  teams to take appropriate steps to remediate.

  • Attend class performance reviews as necessary to ensure proper oversight of performance is maintained. Challenge the underwriting teams to improve the quality of the performance review meetings.

  • Attend reserving meetings and challenge ultimate premiums, loss projections and adequacy of reserves.

  • Identify areas of strategic growth, and work with UW teams to deliver profitable growth targets.

  • Assist the Head of Underwriting Performance to maintain an overview of the acceptability of pricing by class of business and ensuring that the pricing cycle is being appropriately managed in each class of business.

  • Assist in development of the underwriting business plan, working with Finance and other functions.

  • Monitor performance relative to business plans, including any deviations from business plans (including product types and territory), deviations from planned line sizes, aggregate exposure and modelled losses, and recommending any action as appropriate.

  • Manage a team of performance analysts to assist in providing support and challenge to the business.

  • Working across functions, including Actuarial (FP&A, Capital Modelling, Reserving), Risk and Data, to drive better performance.

  • Supportng the Underwriting function directly with data or analytics.

  • Co-ordinate as necessary reports and returns to other external stakeholders such as the FCA and Government terrorism schemes providers.

  • Ensure the relevant MSAUL Committees receive timely and accurate reporting.


What you’ll need:

  • Relevant underwriting performance experience. Consideration would also be given to candidates from either an actuarial, data analytics or portfolio management looking to pursue a career in underwriting performance

  • Strong Client Facing Skills; managing internal and external key client relationships to deliver efficient and suitable solutions and ensuring ‘buy in’ for such processes.

  • Negotiation Skills; Handling competing priorities and ensuring full engagement from key stakeholders into the product management process.
