Full Job Description

Axis VFX are looking to hire Lead Compositors to join us on a freelance basis, to work across a variety of VFX projects remote*/onsite in our Bristol based studio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with and taking direction from the Compositing Supervisor and VFX Supervisor to help evaluate the creative and technical approaches.
  • Responsible for working with the Show Supervisors and production to assess, assign and monitor compositing needs
  • Design and develop procedural and innovative tool sets, pipelines and techniques for the Compositors
  • Leading a team of artists and ensuring that the output is of a consistent and high quality.
  • Performing all tasks associated with the compositing process, including 2D tracking, matte extraction, layering of elements, and colour grading on difficult shots.
  • Developing key looks for shots that can be rolled out across the rest of the sequence as well as taking on more complex compositing tasks.
  • Providing solutions to technical and aesthetic challenges.
  • Being accountable for meeting productivity and quota targets on time and at a high level of quality.
  • Offering guidance and mentoring to junior and mid level compositors.
  • Working collaboratively with artists from other disciplines.
  • Clearly communicating progress and issues.

Required Skills

  • At least 5+ years experience in compositing digital VFX for film and/or Television
  • Strong artistic ability and eye for detail
  • Advanced demonstrated knowledge and production experience of using Nuke
  • Experience with complex matte extractions and motion tracking
  • Must have strong knowledge of compositing workflow and VFX pipelines.
  • Experience in leading a team of compositors
  • Must have strong aptitude for technical workflow challenges such as directory structure, file formats, naming conventions, scripts, automation tools, automated dailies, etc.
  • Ability to mentor coworkers
  • Familiarity with using Unix systems
  • Ability to work gracefully under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to write Nuke gizmos and/or plugins is a plus
  • Python and/or C++ experience a plus
